Is your Apple Watch waterproof? – Guide

As someone who has experienced the panic of having to quickly dry an iPhone or MacBook after an accidental liquid spill (a potentially costly mistake), I was a little apprehensive when exposing my Apple Watch Series 3 to water for the first time. This was mainly because I hadn’t given the matter much thought before jumping into a kayak and paddling, vaguely knowing my device was “waterproof” (it had swim training options, after all), but not much else. According to Apple, all Apple Watch models are waterproof. However, if you’re wondering which Apple Watches are waterproof, the answer is none.

But what is the difference between a water resistant watch and a waterproof watch? Waterproof is defined as impermeable to water. On the other hand, water resistance is the ability to resist water penetration to a certain extent. No Apple Watch is not just waterproof, but there are different water resistances depending on the model. The Apple Watch Series 1 and the first-generation Apple Watch are splash-proof; However, dipping them is not recommended. Apple Watch Series 2 and newer are significantly more waterproof. If you’re not sure which model you have, don’t take any chances.

Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch 1 | very minimal water resistance

Bad news if you want to swim with any of the earlier Apple Watch models: they aren’t very waterproof. If you have one of the first models (called Series 0) or Series One produced up by mid-2018, you’ll have to make an effort to keep it dry. While it should be fine to use when washing dishes or washing your car, you should avoid submerging it. And if you accidentally submerge it, be sure to dry it as quickly as possible to avoid damage. Water on the screen is much less of a problem than water on the ports or speaker.

Apple Watch 2, 3, 4, 5 | waterproof up at 50 meters

While smartphones and most electronic devices use an IP rating for water (where IP 7 is safe to be submerged in), some companies use a depth rating for watches. If your Apple Watch is series 2, 3, 4 or 5, it is water resistant up to 50 meters when you bought it. Over time, most devices will become less waterproof in response to the effects of everyday use.

If you own an Apple Watch Series 2 (released in 2016) or Series 3 (released in 2017), chances are it’s not as waterproof as it used to be. Consider using it for swimming, although using it for showering, cleaning, or any other task that involves keeping your hands in the water for a few seconds should be absolutely fine. It’s the continuous submersion that can be a problem.

If you have a Series 4 or 5 (released in 2018 and 2019 respectively), you can probably still use it for water sports. It should be safe for water sports like swimming, snorkeling or all day river cruises. Several dedicated apps for swimmers are available on the App Store, although the Apple Watch itself (Series 2 and up) is suitable for swimming, with features which can guess which strokes you are doing and measure your effort rate.

Apple advises that it is best to avoid contact with potentially harmful liquids such as insect repellent, acidic substances, perfume or shampoo and conditioner, no matter what model you have, so try to wash it. up after contact with anything other than fresh water, rinse.

Apple Watch SE | waterproof up at 50 meters

if you chose up Apple Watch SE to save a few bucks (starts at $120 / £110 / AU$170 less the Series 6 launched simultaneously), you’re in luck. While you’ll lose some health features and you have to make do with a slightly slower processor, you don’t have to sacrifice water resistance: the Apple Watch SE is also rated for 50 meters. So you can swim calmly or soak in a hot tub – it should be able to handle all but the most extreme water activities.

Apple Watch 6 | waterproof up at 50 meters

The Apple Watch 6 offers the same water resistance and is the best choice for anyone who wants to swim a lot. The Apple Watch 6 and Apple Watch SE are the latest in the Apple Watch lineup, which launched in November 2020. And since water resistance decreases over time, the newer the watch, the better the water resistance. The Apple 6 also has some health features not offered in the SE that frequent swimmers might want, such as an electric heart sensor and oximeter to measure how well your heart is pumping oxygen throughout your body.
