Guide: Setting Multiple Download Folders in Chrome Browser: Guide

I download loads of stuff from the internet every day and this means that I often come across image files and PDFs over the shoulder with Word documents and exe files in the Downloads folder. For someone like me who wants to keep everything in a systematic and organized way, the unified Downloads folder is an absolute nightmare. Plus, not to mention the insane amount of time spent organizing (read copy and paste) the downloaded files in their respective places.

While there is an option to change the location of the downloaded files, you usually have to manually choose the location every time you download something. Bummer alert!

Fortunately, everything is not over yet.

With a Chrome extension called Save in … (aptly named, right?), You can separate the downloaded files into neat little folders according to the file type.

This little extension adds a context menu that simplifies the process of saving your files, all from the comfort of your browser. The installation process is simple and straightforward. In addition, you can also create symlinks (or symbolic links) to store files outside the download folders.

Most interesting feature is the ability to make folders dynamic and rename them accordingly. Exciting, right?

So let’s take a look at how to get this extension to work.

1. Create or rename folders

The Save in extension has three folders (images, files and videos) in the context menu by default. All you need to do is right-click on a file, go to Save In and select the folder of your choice. Simple, you see.

If you want to rename the folders, click Options and you will be redirected to the extension’s Settings page. Delete the old names here and enter the new names of your choice.

As you can see, I have five special folders for PDFs, images, videos, photos and documents.

When you’re done, just close the window and you’ll see the options automatically added to the context window.

Note: If you don’t see the actual folders in the Downloads folder, don’t panic! They are created after you download the files.

2. Create subfolders

Yes, we understand that a single image folder may not be enough for the tons of pictures of cats and dogs. The best bet is to create a subfolder in the actual image folder. The good thing is that with Save to, you can create subfolders just as easily as folders.

Setting up multiple download folders in Chrome 5

Go to the Options tab and enter the name of the new subfolder after the actual folder, separated by a slash (/). For example, if Cats (yes, I love cat videos!) Is the new folder in the Pictures folder, the name is Pictures / Cats.

The new changes are immediately reflected in the context menu and the subfolders are created as soon as you save anything in them.

3. Keep files outside of the download folder

Save in allows you to create multiple folders in the Downloads folders, but you cannot save files outside of this folder. Fortunately, it can be easily overcome with Symlinks.

For those of you who don’t know, Symlinks are shortcuts to point to files located elsewhere on your Windows computer. Let’s see how to use them to organize the downloaded files.

Step 1: First create the destination folder (s).

Step 2: To create a Symlink, open the command prompt in administrator mode and run the following command:

Mklink / D

So if you create a Symlink from Downloads folder to Music folder, it would be something like:

mklink / D “C: UsersNamrataDownloadsSourceFolder” “C: UsersNamrataMusicDestinationFolder”

Step 3: When done, create a folder with the same name in the Save In extension. Now you just need to click Save and the file will go to the destination folder automatically.

Organization Bliss!

This way, you can set multiple download folders in Chrome and save your files accordingly. However, this handy Chrome extension isn’t just limited to the options above. It also lets you add a range of variables to the file names, such as date or time. Moreover, you can also save files in dynamic folders by adding the variable names in the folder name, and in no time you will have folders sorted by creation date. See.
