Do you enjoy trying out new software and tools on your Windows PC? Software that improves your desktop experience? These tools are sure to help you get your job done. But sometimes they tend to do malicious things in your system under the hood. Malicious things like installing malware, keyloggers, adware, etc. Your antivirus will definitely detect them. But you shouldn’t download such things in the first place. Turn right?

So today I will show you how to protect your PC from such unknown threats using the sandbox technology. In sandboxing, you don’t have to worry about the software you download. It is downloaded and installed in an isolated environment on your PC. This protects your system from potential threats. For those of you who don’t know about Sandbox technology, here’s a quick overview.back to menu ↑
What is Sandbox?
Sandbox is basically a mechanism in which you run programs in an isolated environment on your system. An environment that is separate from your current system. Therefore, any changes you make in this isolated environment will not affect your current system. Sandbox software is usually used to test unverified software from untrusted third-party companies.
You have probably heard of VMware and Virtualbox. These are both virtualization software. You can run a different operating system on your already installed operating system. Sandbox software does the same, but uses the resource of your current system. And saves your work in a temporary storage on your hard drive. You can clean up this temporary storage at any time.
Now let’s take a look at one of the Sandbox software we are going to cover today.
Shade Sandbox is a free Windows application developed by Cybergenic Security. It’s free, but still requires a license key to actually activate the free software. Without the activation code, you will only get a 2-day trial. It can run on Windows Vista and above. Here we tested it on Windows 10.
The installation is quite simple. You must add a name and email address. They will send you the activation code to add after the software is installed. A reboot is required for a successful installation. After you reboot, the Shade Sandbox will launch up and you will get the following dialog.
You already have three browsers in the sandbox environment. You can normally start these browsers from your desktop. One thing to note is that the files you download are stored in the Shade folder. Click on Open Shade Folder and there you will get all the files saved under the folder named C.
To add other software to Sandbox, just drag and drop it. And removing is as easy as selecting the application and clicking Remove an application from Shade.
When you have finished testing the software, you can click Clean Up Shadow to clear all data about the software you just tested. So, let’s say you tested a Chrome extension and that extension turned out to be an adware. Now this extension will not affect your actual Chrome application or your system. It only affects the sandbox environment. This way, your system is not vulnerable to new potential threats.back to menu ↑
Now shadow sandbox actually creates a new system based on your current system. So of course it needs the current CPU resources to provide power up the new system. These are the results of our CPU usage. We tested it on a PC with Intel i3 clocked at 3.40 GHz with 8 GB RAM.
CPU usage in particular increased when switching back and forth between applications. In addition, a Filewall service tends to increase CPU usage when applications are running in Sandbox mode. Have the system slow down visually. So if you are thinking of using Shade Sandbox, probably do it on a better system.back to menu ↑
If you have used Sandboxie, this application will be a complete let down in terms of customization. (We’ve already shared a bit about Sandboxie. So, have a look.) You can’t edit anything. You will not get any information about the application running on Sandbox. You don’t get any configuration settings and even the system tray menu has no options.

Good alternative for the average user
Not everyone wants to adapt. For the average users, Shade sandbox can be a good alternative to Sandboxie. You don’t have to mess with a lot of settings, but you can still protect the system from malware threats. So, what do you think of Shade Sandbox? Is It Worth Using?
