Guide: Telegram vs Discord: Comparison and Review

Telegram and Discord are rapidly changing the way users, businesses and gamers interact, share information and make announcements. Both apps allow instant messaging, voice calls over IP and the creation of large groups of users. That’s just not possible in one mobile messaging app like whatsapp.

While I’m not as active in the games scene as I used to be when CS 1.6 was still a thing, I do use Discord, a VoIP app built for gamers. I recently started and find it both exciting and fun. It also reminds me vaguely of Yahoo! Group chats.

On the other hand, because I like to follow the blockchain-related news and keep up to date with projects that interest me. For that I have been using Telegram lately. Most ICOs and blockchain projects use Telegram to make announcements and conduct discussions.

I am sure several other communities are using Discord and Telegram in the same way. You can find communities with users interested in a wide variety of topics and categories. Both apps are free, easy to use, allow users to easily invite others, and offer many ways to communicate.

We will take a look at how these two apps are different and which one is a better option for you.

1. Groups, channels and servers

You can create groups and channels using both Telegram and Discord. While quite a few people use the terms interchangeably, they mean different things for both apps. And then there are servers on Discord.

Groups in Telegram are designed to hold up up to 200 members where each member can add new members. Once the group exceeds the 200 member limit, you can turn it into a supergroup that can hold up up to 100,000 members.

Channels can contain an unlimited number of members, where you as a channel owner can broadcast messages and make announcements to your users or subscribers. Channel members cannot respond to a particular message.

Note: New users on a channel can see the full history of posts.

Discord works differently and is very scalable. It will create a server that can hold up to 500 channels with no limit on the number of users the channels or servers can onboard. Short and easy to remember.

2. Security and privacy

Telegram groups and channels are encrypted end-to-end, providing greater peace of mind to users who can be both professional and casual. You can also use the secret chat feature for safer chat or file sharing. Telegram has been banned in Russia because its founders decided not to share their users’ data with the government. That’s one reason why business users prefer Telegram over Discord, which is more gamer-focused and doesn’t offer encryption.

However, Telegram’s decision to use their internal encryption technology MTProto instead of the existing Signal protocol has received some criticism. Telegram then published an article on their blog to explain the difference.

Telegram is owned by a non-profit organization that provides source codes for their web and mobile apps. Meanwhile, Discord has come under the radar for a privacy policy that doesn’t respect users’ data or even privacy. Consider this a majorup

With Telegram, you can delete any message that you have sent within 48 hours. Discord allows you to delete messages in channels and only direct messages that are up up to two weeks old. Some bots claim to delete all messages, but I have yet to come across one to prove that.

Telegram vs Discord 5

Telegram secret chat servers do not allow message forwarding, are not supported up on Telegram servers and users can send self-destructing messages, similar to Snapchat. Also, I couldn’t take a screenshot in the secret chat window on Android.

Finally, both Telegram and Discord support 2FA (Two Factor Authentication).

One thing I didn’t understand is Telegram’s need to ask users’ their phone numbers when you create an account. Maybe it’s a mechanism to curb spam accounts, but that’s open to discussion.

3. Unusual Features

Both Discord and Telegram support the most popular platforms such as Android, iOS, Web, Windows, Linux and macOS.

You can share images and videos with both. However, Telegram goes a step further to let you share GIFs, PiP videos, stickers, video messages and your current location.

You can make calls on both, but Discord is taking the lead here by allowing video calling and screen sharing. Discord is widely used by gamers to showcase their skills, and it works effortlessly without leaving the game you are currently playing.

Telegram vs Discord 6

Telegram channels are known to be often plagued with spam from the owners and bots. Discord provides greater control by assigning user roles and encouraging them to have a chance to become a high-ranking member on the server. Members can be appointed to various roles such as subscriber, administrator, and moderators to heal groups of thousands of members.

There is a built-in mechanism that allows you to arrange comments, making it easier to separate noise in the chat rooms.

File transfer is where Discord falls behind. By default, you can only transfer files up up to 8MB in size, which isn’t much compared to Telegram’s generous 1.5GB limit. Furthermore, Discord offers a premium plan called Nitro, which increases this limit to 50MB for $ 4.99 / month, along with the ability to use a GIF as your avatar and use animated emojis.

Telegram vs Discord 7

Keeping gamers in mind, Discord shows users what game others are playing and even what music they are listening to on Spotify. Discord also pulls your friends and other contacts from Facebook, Twitter, Twitch and Steam.

Discord allows its members to use syntax highlighting and markdown while composing text messages.

Telegram vs Discord

If you are an employer running a startup or a business with security, privacy and data the words in mind, I would recommend Telegram. It is the safer of the two and is completely free.

If you are a gamer or casual user looking for a fun and non-formal vibe along with an intuitive vibe, I would recommend Discord.
