Guide: This Tool Will help You Get Photoshop-Like Experience in Browser
Adobe Photoshop is the ultimate post-processing frontier for most amateur photographers and graphic designers. The versatile toolbox enables countless graphical things, which otherwise would have to work with different photo editing tools (or apps). That said, the $ 20 / month price tag for using the Photoshop app can be overwhelming for beginners.
Last week, while looking for an alternative to Photoshop, I came across a cool web-based image editor: Photopea. It offers a Photoshop-like editing experience, is free, and works on all popular browsers such as Opera, Firefox, Chrome, and Edge. That’s great news for people who are always on the go.
But before we proceed, I want to make a few things clear. Photopea’s image editing experience is very similar to Photoshop. The site does not claim to replicate or clone the entire Photoshop app, but the resemblance is uncanny. It is a web-based tool and has its limitations. You won’t find advanced filters like Liquify or Adaptive Wide Angle. However, don’t be dismayed.
Photopea is perfect for both fast and complicated editing tasks involving layers, masking and blending mechanisms, and so on.
Now that you know a little bit about Photopea, let’s take a look at the salient featuresback to menu ↑
How to Use Photopea?
Ivan Kutskir, a programmer from Prague, has spent more than 3.5 years developing Photopea. This Photoshop alternative supports a variety of file formats including JPEG, PNG, PSD and DNG files.
If you’ve used Photoshop before, you’ll feel good about it homePhotopea’s interface is almost identical to Photoshop’s and you can relate to the grayish-black theme. You’ll find the toolbar on the right and the layers and history panel on the left. In addition, the left panel is fully customizable via the Window tab. The only problem is that with each new project you have to realign the windows for your convenience.
Photopea bundles many tools such as Lasso, Magic Wand, Clone and Brush. To select a tool, click on it with the left mouse button and choose the necessary sub tool.
With an accidental similarity of the tools, distinguishing between Photoshop’s toolbar and Photopea’s toolbar is difficult.
You can also easily add and edit image layers. So whether it’s creating a multilayer image for your college project or creating a double exposure image, Photopea can do it all.
Of course, you need to be well versed in the concept of layers and opacity to get the most out of it.
The tool that caught our attention, however, is the image adjustment. If you have a detailed image, you can further improve it with these options available under Image> Adjustments. As with Photoshop (I promise, this is the last time I do this comparison), it allows you to change the tonal range of the image.
All you need to do is mark three points for highlights, centers and shadows and then change the graph according to the demand of the image.back to menu ↑
If you are a Photoshop user, you should know that it supports a range of customizable (and transferable) keyboard shortcuts.
However, when we talk about the standard bundles, you can be sure that there are many Photopea bundles. And the good news is that Photopea and Photoshop share the same keyboard shortcuts for functions such as Merge Down (Ctrl + E), Move (Ctrl), Clone (S), and Hand (Spacebar).
Since Photopea is a web-based tool, you cannot use predefined keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl + Q or Ctrl + W for obvious reasons. You can find the full range of keyboard shortcuts under More> Keyboard shortcuts.back to menu ↑
Connect to Google Drive
You can also connect Photopea to your Google Drive to edit images stored in the cloud. To do this, open an image in Google Drive, then click the drop-down arrow in viewer mode to tap Open with. Now select Connect more apps, search for Photopea in the search book, then click Connect.
You must allow popups to give the initial permissions. After that, you can use Photopea to open an image from your Google Drive. Whenever you press the Ctrl + S keyboard shortcut while working on an image in Photopea, it will be saved to Google Drive.
The only thing to keep in mind is that the old image will be overwritten. So make multiple copies to keep the original version. It is also quite easy to delete connected apps from Google Drive.back to menu ↑
Pros and cons
The good thing about having a web-based image editor is that it starts immediately, unlike tools like GIMP or Photoshop that take a while to load. You need an active internet connection to use Photopea, of course.
You can use Photopea in any web browser on a Windows PC or a Mac. This is especially useful if you have a backupup of your image files in the cloud. It supports many file formats including PSD, JPG, PNG, Sketch, SVG, and XD, making it a multi-platform friendly tool.
Photopea has its limitations, however. While the interface is quite good, it’s not as smooth as Photoshop’s. If you tend to overdo effects and filters, you may end up up with an unresponsive web page. Also, this tool does not automatically save images on your PC as it cannot overwrite files. So you have to manually save the files from time to time.
You’ll find a number of ad panels on the sides that you can remove by upgrading to a premium subscription of $ 9 for 30 days and $ 20 for 90 days.back to menu ↑
Is it suitable for beginners?
Photopea is a great tool if you are looking for a Photoshop-like experience in the browser. And right now it is features are unmatched by other online photo editing suites. You need to have a little knowledge of the different tools, filters and layers and you will be sorted.
Photopea is a free app and does not have all the advanced editing tools. Basically, you can treat it like a stripped-down version of Photoshop or Photoshop Lite. It’s perfect for updating your editing skills before opting for a paid subscription to Photoshop.
