There are tools that these customers can use to easily translate text from the email window – no need to leave the message.

Thunderbird

If you are using Thunderbird as your email client, Quick Translator is a nice add-on that translates text easily. It’s non-intrusive and stays out of your way until you need it. Download Quick Translator from this link.

Start Thunderbird and go to Tools> Add-ons. Click on the settings icon on the right and select Install add-on from file. Browse to the downloaded file to install it.

A new icon is placed in the lower right corner of the Thunderbird window, the translator. When you receive an email that is not in your native language, highlight the text that is unreadable and press the little translator icon. The text is displayed in a new bubble window, from which you can copy if necessary.

Outlook

Maybe Thunderbird is not your choice for an email client. Fortunately, Outlook has a built-in translator.

Highlight the text to be translated and right click to display a translation option.

The translator sidebar opens, where you choose the source and target language. The translated text appears below these drop-down lists.

Firefox

If you’re not using a local email client, but instead open email in Firefox, translators are available for any plain text, including text in email services such as Microsoft, Gmail, Yahoo, and other accounts. The one we’ll be looking at is the same one used in Thunderbird: Quick Translator.

If you use the email from a browser, most such add-ons are universal and will work on all email services you can use in the browser. We’re using Outlook in the example below, so we’ll highlight the text and then click the float click to translate button

Just like in Thunderbird, the translated text is immediately displayed at the bottom right of the screen.

Chrome

We’ll be taking a look at a Chrome extension that can be used for translating email, but first, keep in mind that if you’re using Gmail, you can easily translate a message from the additional menu options in any email.

The above example was originally written in Irish. By choosing the extra options and then selecting Translate message, Gmail automatically detects the original language, giving you a readable format. Simply change the target language from the drop-down list above the message or view the original again with the View original message link.

Download the Instant Translate extension found here to translate text outside of Gmail (such as Yahoo, Outlook, etc.) but within the Chrome browser.

Once installed, right-click on any highlighted text and select Translate to English to translate the text into English.

It’s not every day that we receive emails in a language we don’t understand. But when that happens, you will save time if you have a translation tool at hand. Better to keep it installed on your email client (it’s not built-in) or use the add-on in the browser to have the translation run immediately when needed.
