You can use Disk Cleanup on Windows 11 – Guide
Microsoft continues to promote the Settings app in Windows 11, just as it did in Windows 10. The latest victim of the replacement policy is the classic Disk Cleanup tool. Used among other things to clean up old versions of windows for free up Gigabytes of storage space, Microsoft announced in 2018 that it would replace the classic tool with Storage Sense, which it added to the operating system’s Settings application.
Up until now, Disk Cleanup was accessible from the Drives Properties dialog. Microsoft replaced the link to the Disk Cleanup tool with a link to Storage Sense in the latest build of Windows 11.
Although it is still possible to load Disk Cleanup directly, it is no longer possible to open it in the drive properties dialog.
How to Knife
Enabling Storage Usage button opens the Storage used on other drives page of the Settings app. The page lists the capacity of all drives and the free and used storage rate. Another click is required to display how storage is used on the drive.
Options for cleaning files are not displayed on the page. You need to open the main Storage page in the settings to get this option (or select Start > Settings > System > Storage). Select Cleaning Recommendations and Windows will display cleaning options on the next page.
Disk Cleanup Tool is the best application
The entire process is not as simple as using the Disk Cleanup tool. Opening questions aside, the cleaning recommendations are not as user-friendly as the Disk Cleanup tool. Disk Cleanup gives you an at-a-glance view of all cleanable items up; while you may need to click the “clear up system files” button after the program starts for more cleaning options, it is faster and provides a better view of items that can be removed from the system to free up up Disk Space.
Disk Cleanup is still present in the latest build of Windows 11, and chances are it will remain an option initially after the release of Windows 11.
Windows 11 users can launch it by typing Disk Cleanup in Start. Windows 11 displays the tool as the first result and can be opened this way. There is a chance that Microsoft will change the result manually so that the storage settings page will open.
You can still load it by opening the Run box with Windows-R shortcut to start cleanmgr.exe.
Eventually, Disk Cleanup will be removed from Windows. Windows users who prefer the tool can use third-party alternatives. There is Cleanmgr +, an open source alternative that replicates functionality, which can be used instead.
It looks different but offers the same cleaning options as the classic Disk Cleanup tool.
