Guide: 1Password vs Dashlane: Comparison and Review

If you clicked on this article, chances are you already know that 1Password is considered the king of password managers. I’ve been using 1Password for about a year now. There are a few other options, such as KeePass for Windows or another favorite, LastPass. We wrote extensively here on Guiding Tech about the great advantages of 1Password over LastPass if you’re interested. But I want to throw a new name into the mix: Dashlane.

Dashlane is considerably less well known than 1Password or LastPass. In fact, I didn’t even know about it until I recently saw it as one of the featured apps in the Mac App Store. I bought 1Password directly from the website last year and found that it charges for upgrades even if the amount is new features is pretty minimal. Slightly annoyed by that, I tried Dashlane and immediately fell in love. This is why.

Dashlane’s design is second to none

Main reason Dashlane caught my eye while I was featured in the Mac App Store is because the all-new Dashlane 4 comes with a fresh, unified design that makes all the difference. Your logins and passwords are organized in a nice graphical grid that prioritizes the website logos so you can quickly find what you need. On the left is navigation between passwords, your secure notes (such as Wi-Fi passwords and software licenses), bank accounts, credit cards, receipts and more. Then you can search at the top for any information you store in Dashlane or add something new.

1Password is always praised for having a great design, but it seems a bit outdated to me right now – just a simple list of accounts and vaults. Dashlane’s organization and intelligent color coordination are worlds for 1Password.

Like 1Password, Dashlane also includes a necessary browser extension to login or use autocomplete. In my experience, Dashlane worked for many more signups than 1Password. The icon even appears in text fields for when you don’t log in completely automatically.

No other password manager I’ve tried, including 1Password and LastPass, has a better design than Dashlane 4. And it’s consistent across all platforms.

You are safer with Dashlane

Dashlane has features built-in that actually help with online security. First, it has a security dashboard that can be accessed from the sidebar. This gives you a personalized security score based on the strength of your current passwords and how often you reuse passwords. If you’re not satisfied with your score, you can start by changing your passwords to make them more complex and repeat them less often for different websites.

Better yet, Dashlane has a password changer feature – 1Password does not. If you see a weak password on your security dashboard, Dashlane will not only be able to login and change the password to an auto-generated strong password, it will also update the login information so that you can save it for next time. You don’t have to do anything, and it really works with most of the websites I’ve tried it with.

Finally, Dashlane has a fantastic feature called Emergency. When a bad situation comes up where you think you need someone to access and / or change all your passwords for you, that’s where Emergency comes in. You set up a contact – someone you trust very much – who can request the information you want from him or her in Dashlane at any time. If they ask for it, set an allotted amount of time in which you can decline the request, otherwise it will be automatically assigned to them.

Note: If that worries you, this feature is completely optional. You can also set the waiting time to 24 hours or 60 days. That gives you enough time to decline a request to see your private content in Dashlane. In addition, the contact must also have a Dashlane account.

Dashlane is free (usually)

While 1Password costs $ 49.99 and often requires paid upgrades in the future, Dashlane uses a completely different pricing model. It is completely free to download and use on your computer even without ads. The browser extension is also included.

However, you can upgrade to a premium version that allows you to sync all your passwords across multiple devices such as iOS and Android and also allows you to view your data on the web in case you are on a different computer. The premium version also keeps automatic backups. This costs $ 39.99 per year.

Yes, that’s more than LastPass’s modest fee of just $ 12 a year, but Dashlane has a lot more features and a much tighter design. The good news is that if you’re anything like me, you really don’t have all of your passwords and sensitive information on you mobile device. That’s why I used Dashlane completely free of charge, without any complaints.

Important: One thought on security: yes, it’s true 1Password stores everything locally, while Dashlane and LastPass store your passwords on their servers. The latter companies say that it is impossible for them to actually access user accounts and access that information. Plus with AES 256 encryption and the master password that is only stored locally, it’s also next to impossible for hackers to ever get to your Dashlane information.

So what do you think of Dashlane? Have you been persuaded to try it through 1Password or LastPass? Let us know in the comments.
