## Guide: Install Windows 11 Using a USB Drive - Guide

For many years, we have been able to create Linux Live floppies that fully boot and run from a USB flash drive (or optical disk). These portable operating system installations can be useful when you just want to try out an operating system without worrying about the platform on your internal hard drive or SSD. And they can be good if you want to take the operating system and programs with you when switching between computers.

Thanks to Rufus, a popular free app that creates bootable USB drives, you can do a portable Windows 11 installation that runs from a flash drive you carry in your pocket. When testing Windows To Go by Rufus feature, we were able to use the same Windows 11 hard drive on two different computers with minimal effort.

## Get a Windows 11 ISO file

Updated October 13, 2021: The official Windows 11 ISO file is available from the Microsoft website. You can get it from this website and then start installing Windows 11. To get an ISO file, you need to use a third-party tool called UUP Dump. It is an open source tool that can download Windows preview builds directly from Windows Update servers and convert the packages into easy-to-install ISO files.

Go to the uupdump.net website and click on Downloads.

You can see a list of builds with related information. Choose a build based on your PC's architecture. My PC uses a 64-bit system, so I chose Windows 11 Insider Preview 10.0.22000.65 (co_release) amd64.

Choose a language and click Next.

Select your edition of Windows and click Next.

Check the option of Download and convert to ISO and Create download package.

Unzip this ZIP package and double click the cmd file to get a command prompt window.

You must give the administrator permission and a Windows 11 preview build ISO file is being generated.

## Create a bootable Windows 11 USB drive

After getting the Windows 11 ISO file, you should now make a bootable Windows 11 USB drive.

Download Rufus and launch it on your PC.

Plug in your USB flash drive and choose the Windows 11 ISO file you have. Make some settings for the unit.

Click START to start burning the ISO file to your USB flash drive.

## Install Windows 11 from USB

Everything is ready and it's time to start installing Windows 11. Follow these instructions:

Make sure the USB flash drive is connected to the computer.

Navigate to the Boot tab and use the arrow keys to select USB flash drive as the first boot order.

Save the change and boot the PC from the bootable USB drive.

After a while, you will get the Windows setup interface. Just specify the language, time and currency format, and keyboard method.

Click Install Now to continue.

Choose I don't have a product key to continue.

Select the Custom option to install Windows only.

Choose the partition you want to install Windows 11 on and start the installation.
