Current stable Chrome provides customization button on the New Tab page to let you upload and use a custom image as your NTP background or you can also select and use wallpapers from Chrome's background collection for the same: landscapes, textures, life, land, art , cityscapes, geometric shapes, solid and marine colors.  You can select an image from the collection and set it as your NTP background.

Chrome 70 Canary now offers a "Refresh daily" option on all background collections, which is off by default.  Now you can go to a collection, select an image and activate the setting.  A new image will be applied to the NTP and the next day it will be replaced with a random image from the same collection from which you selected Chrome Background Daily Update for New Tabs.
