## How to be prepared for a cyberattack - Guide

The US sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine earlier this week have raised significant concerns about retaliatory cyberattacks and repercussions from the region on US and other allied organizations. Many anticipate attacks ranging from destructive campaigns using disk cleaners and ransomware to distributed denial-of-service, phishing, misinformation, disinformation and influence campaigns. Security experts believe that some of the attacks will be carried out by state-backed Russian attackers.

Others will likely be launched by actors sympathetic to Russian interests, and others will likely simply spill over from Ukraine and cause collateral damage, as the NotPetya malware did a few years ago. Here are seven actions security experts say companies should take now to prepare for these attacks. Most of this advice includes actions that companies should have already taken. If not, now is a good time to implement them, experts say.

## How to be prepared for a cyber attack

### What should I do to help protect myself before a cyber attack or data breach

#### Protect your files and devices

keep your software up Until the present date. Keeping your security software, web browser and operating system updated to the latest version. The updates fix security holes that cybercriminals can exploit to access your personal information or infect your devices with malicious software.

Protect your files. You can choose one or more ways to go back up your important documents. Your options include external hard drives, flash drives, backup and cloud services.

Encrypt your devices. You likely have sensitive personal information on your devices, including laptops, tablets and smartphones. Consider encrypting these files. Encryption scrambles the readable text so that only someone who has the decryption key can access and read it.

Use multifactor identification. Multi-factor identification (also called two-factor authentication) can help prevent cybercriminals from accessing your accounts. Take the extra security step to enable multi-factor authentication on any account that requires login credentials. Often, a security code will be sent to your smartphone to complete the login process.

#### Secure your wireless network

Secure your router. Some routers come with a default password and cybercriminals may already know what it means that your network would be at risk. Change your router password to something a cybercriminal would hardly guess.

Use strong encryption. There are different types of encryption. Make sure your router offers WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. Both are strong forms of security. Encryption protects information sent over the network so that it cannot be read by outsiders.

#### Practice smart cybersecurity habits

Use strong passwords. Make your passwords strong and unique. A strong password contains at least 12 characters, including letters, numbers and special symbols. Avoid using the same password on more than one account.

Use a VPN. A virtual private network better known as a VPN can help protect against online threats. A VPN provides online privacy and anonymity by creating a private network from a public internet connection.

Keep up to date. It's a good idea to keep up with cyber threats, in part, because they continue to evolve. Keeping up to date on news and developments is one way to help prepare to react to new cyber threats.

### What should I do before and after a cyber attack or data breach

#### Confirm the breach and find out if your information has been compromised

It is important to act quickly. Contact the breached organization and pay attention to any statements from the breached organization to find out if their data is part of the information involved in the security incident.

#### Find out what kind of data was stolen or affected

Affected data type data may guide your next steps. For example, you might consider monitoring your accounts for unauthorized activity, changing your password, or freezing credit on your accounts.

#### Accept the breached organization's offers to help

Violated organizations often offer help. They may offer credit monitoring services or identity theft protection, for example. Consider whether the services are right for you.

#### Change and strengthen your login credentials and passwords

To help protect your accounts, change your passwords and make sure they are strong and complex. Be sure to strengthen your login credentials, passwords, and security questions and answers.

#### Get in touch with the right people and take additional action

It is a good idea to contact the violated organization to seek help with your recovery. You can also contact other organizations. For example, you can get free credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com to watch for any suspicious or unknown credit activity. Or you might consider putting a fraud alert or credit freeze on your accounts with the three major credit bureaus.

#### Stay alert monitor your accounts

The steps you should take following a cyber attack or data breach often depend on the category of organization targeted and the type of damage done or the information revealed. Also, be on the lookout for phishing attempts by cyber thieves who may contact you via phone or e-mail, claiming to be from the violated company, trying to trick you to provide personal information.
