Once installed, you should open the image whose background color you want to change.  Go to the "File" menu and select open and browse your folders using this window.

Now that your image is open, select the Path tool by clicking this icon,

In the toolbox window, this tool will allow you to select the outline of the figure in your image so that you can isolate it from the background, for optimal viewing you should change the zoom setting to 200% or 400% to do this scroll to the bottom of the image window and open the zoom menu and select the zoom that best suits your needs.

The next step is to start selecting the area you want to cut, clicking on a point and continue clicking the entire edge of the figure.  Make as many clicks as necessary to complete it and reach the starting point to close the path.

Go to the "Select" menu and select the "From path" option

And then go to the “Edit” menu and select “Copy”.  After that, go to the Foreground and background colors tool and select the color you like in the background of your new image.

Create a new image by going to File > New… Select the background color by clicking on Advanced options and in the Fill with box select Foreground color.

You will get something like that.  Now just paste the image you copied in Edit > Paste.  To finish the process, go to Layers and select Anchor Layer, it should look like this.
