If you suspect your computer has a virus or malware, act quickly to prevent the infection from spreading.  You can quickly remove the infection by following a few easy steps and using malware removal software. ## How to    clean infected computer

### Suspected of acting by computer?  Do a little digging and check for symptoms.

Look for problems characteristic of a malware infection:

Does your web browser crash or not respond?

Are you redirected to different web pages than the ones you are trying to visit?

You are bombarded with pop-up posts?

Is your computer slower than usual?

Do you see new icons on the desktop that you don't recognize?

Are your fans spinning suspiciously louder or stronger than usual?

Unfortunately, even if you don't see anything wrong with your computer, there could be problems brewing under the surface, sneaking around and messing with your files undetected.  So it's a safe bet to move to Step 2 even if you can't find a symptom.

### Use protection: Enter safe mode.

Remove CDs and DVDs and disconnect USB drives from the computer.  Then hang up.

When restarting, press the F8 key repeatedly.  That should bring up in the Advanced Boot Options menu.

Select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter.  Only minimal programs and services are used in this mode.  If malware is programmed to automatically load when Windows starts, entering safe mode may block the attempt.

### Back up your files.

This includes documents, photos and videos.  Especially cat videos.

do not come back up program files, as this is where infections like to hide.  You can always download these programs again if the files are lost.

### Download an on-demand malware scanner such as Malwarebytes.

If you had no problems connecting to the Internet before you suspected the infection, you can exit Safe Mode after backing up up your files and go back to using your “normal” system.

If your internet was congested up for a suspected infection, try using a friend's computer to download your scanner and move it to your machine using a USB drive.

You can try a program like AdwCleaner, which targets PUPs and adware (those nasty pop-ups that clog your browser).

Restart again if the program finds additional infections.

### Update your operating system, browser and applications.

If there is an update available on any of your software, go ahead and do it.  Some of the most dangerous forms of malware are provided by exploits that take advantage of outdated software.

### Reset all your passwords.

Before being deleted, the malware may have captured your passwords and forwarded them to criminals.  Change all the passwords you can think of and make sure they are strong.  None of this 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 deals.  That's the combination an idiot would wear in his luggage.
