The set-up

The Wyze Cam is fairly easy to set up up. Basically, you need three things: the Wyze Cam, of course, a smartphone or tablet, and a functional Wi-Fi connection. Of course you must camera in a power source, but you get all the necessary parts in the Wyze Cam package. So let’s get started.

The Camera

Let’s start unpacking the actual Wyze Cam. As mentioned, all the parts you need for the camera to function are included in the box. You will find a quick start guide, a corresponding USB cable for connecting the camera to the power source, the plug for the cord, a metal plate with glue for the magnetic bottom part of the Wyze Cam and of course the Wyze Cam itself.

To get started, use the USB cable and plug to connect the camera on a power source. The LED light on the back of the Wyze device will turn solid amber before plugging in. Once you do this, the LED light will start flashing to indicate that your camera is ready for installation.

Connecting the Wyze Cam to your Phone

While the device itself enters setting mode, go to your phone and download the Wyze app from you phone’s dedicated store. Wait for it to download and install and launch the app. To use the app you need to create an account. You can do all of this on your phone. After entering all the required information, go to your email inbox and complete the registration process by copying the unique code from the email you just received from Wyze and entering it into the appropriate field in the Wyze app.

Now you will probably see a big ‘plus’ sign in the center of the screen with ‘Add new device’ written below. Press the plus sign and you will be taken to the device settings screen. Turn the Wyze Cam to the bottom, move the plastic stand and press the button in one of the corners. A female voice should say “Ready to connect”.

Connecting to your WiFi

Before proceeding, it’s essential to keep in mind that the Wyze Cam only works on 2.4 GHz networks, so make sure yours is running on 2.4 GHz and not 5 GHz. Every router comes with a 2.4 GHz network, which means it’s next to impossible not to have it. However, dual band routers come with an additional 5 GHz option, which you will likely see in the Wi-Fi selection menu. Make sure to go for the 2.4 GHz version.

To proceed, find your 2.4 GHz network in the list and connect to it by providing all the required information. Once you’ve done this, a QR code will be displayed on you phone’s / tablet screen. Use the camera to scan the QR code that just appeared on the screen. Make sure to use the camera and the phone as stable as possible, at a distance of about two inches. The camera automatically scans the code in seconds. If the camera does not respond, adjust the distance.

If you did everything correctly, you should hear the woman’s voice from earlier say “QR code scanned, please wait.” You will also see the same at the bottom of you phone’s screen. Press words with a green background. Now wait for the app and the Wyze Cam to complete the process itself. The LED light on the cameraThe back will flash yellow and blue, then only blue, and finally turn solid blue, while the female voice says “Setup complete”.

Name the camera, touch Get started, and you’re done.

The Wyze Cam and your Phone

Anything you want to do with the camera, including access to the video feed, recorded files, options, the two-way microphone, is done through the phone app. It is therefore essential that you connect the device to your phone/ tablet carefully and correctly.
