This is apparently the case for the new HEIF file format.  Currently, newer iPhones and iPads take photos in HEIF (High-Efficiency Image Format) format and save them with HEIC extension.

This format, with all its benefits, is not included in Windows 10, but you can convert HEIC files to JPEG files quite easily with standard Windows tools like Photos and Paint.  Since HEIC requires very little memory, it feels like a long-term add-on.  If you hit a wall when viewing HEIC files in Windows 10 and 11, here is a way to convert HEIC to JPEG.

## How to    convert HEIC to JPEG on Windows

To convert HEIC to JPEG on Windows 10/11 in the easiest way possible, all you need is the built-in Windows Photo application.  Here are the steps you need to follow.

### Open your file in the Windows Photo application

Go to your file on your PC and double click on it.  he will open up by default in the Windows Photo application.

### Click Edit and Create

In the upper right corner, you will see an option that says Edit and Create.  Click on it.

### Click Edit

In the drop-down menu that appears upclick on the first option that says Edit.

### Click Save a copy

If you want to make basic image edits, now is the time.  You can rotate it, rotate it, change its aspect ratio and add filters or make other adjustments.  When finished, select Save a copy.

### Choose where to save your image

The edited file will be a JPEG image that you can save in a separate folder from the HEIC file.  As both images are in different file formats, the JPEG file will not replace the HEIC file.  You can also keep them in the same folder if you like.
