## How to create partition in USB drives on Windows 10 PC - Guide

USB hard disk or memory card as removable storage is the most common device in people's daily lives.  They are widely used to store important data and files such as system backup images.  One of the most important advantages of these devices is their portability.  Transferring data and files between computer and different removable media is convenient and easy.

Sometimes a Kingston or SanDisk USB drive needs to be partitioned multiple times, for example to create different partitions to store different data or to create partitions on an unallocated USB drive.  Therefore, the question of how to partition appears a USB drive.  In fact, you can perform this task using Diskpart as well as the free partition manager.  First, connect the USB drive to your PC and make sure Windows recognizes it.

## How to    Partition an external drive in Windows 10

Open the Windows search box, type “diskmgmt.msc” and press Enter.  Windows search box is magnification button icon in the lower left corner of the screen.

Right-click the external hard drive and select Shrink Volume.  If this option is not available to you, reformat the drive to NTFS and try again.

Enter an amount of space you want to reduce your volume.  The remaining space will be displayed in megabytes.

Then click Shrink.  This will split the hard drive, with a portion becoming unallocated space.

Right-click on the Unallocated space on your drive and select New Simple Volume.

Click Next.

Then indicate the size you want the partition to be.  If you want to use the rest of the space, enter the maximum disk space indicated above.  Then click Next.

Then choose which drive letter you want to use.  Letters that have already been assigned to other drives will not be on this list, so don't worry if there are missing letters.  Just choose from the drive letters still available.

Go to File System and choose a format.  Windows will choose NTFS for you because this is Microsoft's native filing system.  But if you want the external hard drive to work on a Mac as well, you should choose exFAT which is an updated version of FAT32.

Check the Quick Format box and click Next.

Finally, click Finish.  If a pop-up appears telling you to format the disk, click Format Disk.  After that, the newly formatted disk will open automatically.
