## How to delete a Telegram account - Guide

Telegram has recently been criticized by security experts around the world.  The main point that experts are using to divert consumers' attention is the discovery that Telegram does not use end-to-end encryption by default.  Interestingly, there are plenty of privacy-centric messaging apps out there, including WhatsApp, Signal, and more, but not all has gone smoothly for Telegram, especially when it comes to their privacy service.  Earlier this year, it was revealed that the app does not use end-to-end encryption by default, but only provides security for secret Telegram chats.  Telegram has encountered some security issues, including hacking and metadata leaks.

In 2017, hackers distributed malware to Windows computers via Telegram.  It has also been rated as unsafe by organizations such as Stiftung Warentest and the Committee to Protect Journalists.  Telegram allows anyone to delete chat messages without notifying the author.  This gives participants less control over their conversations and can make manipulation easier as the person you are chatting with can change the content of the chat by removing their messages.

## How to    delete Telegram account on iPhone and Android smartphone

Telegram does not offer a direct process for Android users to delete their accounts.  Therefore, users first need to go through the deactivation process.

Open Telegram on your mobile and click on the 'Settings' option.

Select the 'Privacy and Security' option.

Then scroll down to the 'Away For' section to automatically delete your account.

Now, select the period of time after which your Telegram account will be deactivated for good.  You can choose between 1, 3, 6 and 12 months.  (By default, Telegram sets this to 6 months).

Once done, if you don't use your Telegram account within the selected time period, the app will permanently delete your account on Android and iPhone.

## How to    delete a Telegram account permanently using a web browser

Deleting a Telegram account on Android or iPhone takes a few months and users may not want to wait that long.  Therefore, Telegram also gives you the option to delete an account via any web browser.

Go to the 'Telegram Deactivation' page in any web browser using a PC or mobile.

enter the phone number with which your Telegram account was created.  Also, don't forget to put the country code before the mobile number.  Then click 'Next'.

Now, you will receive an alphanumeric code on Telegram mobile application.  Enter the code to log into your Telegram account.

In the 'Telegram Core' section, click on the 'Delete Account' option.  You will also be asked to provide a reason to delete your account.  (This is optional).

Finally, you need to confirm again to delete the Telegram account.  Click on the 'Yes, delete my account' option to end your association with the app.
