Windows 10 and 11 offer a feature called spatial sound, which adds 3D surround sound effects to the audio output on any compatible device.  Windows 10 and 11 offer a feature called Spatial Sound, which allows users to choose an immersive audio experience on PCs. Available on a variety of platforms, Spatial Sound is software feature that truly mimics surround sound and adds multi-directional 3D sound effects to the audio output on any compatible device.

According to Microsoft, it creates “an enhanced atmosphere” that conventional surround-sound formats cannot recreate.  Windows supports several spatial audio formats, including Windows Sonic for headphones, Dolby Atmos for headphones, Dolby Atmos for headphones home theater, DTS: X for home theater and DTS Headphone: X. Windows Sonic is Microsoft's proprietary technology for Windows and is compatible with all headsets, but support for Dolby Atmos and DTS: X must be purchased through the Dolby Access app or the app DTS Sound Unbound.  Both apps are available from the Microsoft Store.

## Enable spatial sound in Windows 11 using settings

Press Win + I to open Windows settings.  You can also use the Start menu, Windows Search, or a shortcut beside the power menu.

Go to System > Sound.

Select the output device you want to connect Spatial Audio to.

Next, find the Spatial Audio section.

Click on the drop-down menu and select Windows Sonic for Headphones.

## Enable Spatial Sound in Windows 11 Control Panel

Open the Control Panel in Windows 11 using the shortcut Win + R and the control command.

Go to Hardware and Sound > Sound. If you use Large Icons or Small Icons view, click Sound.

In the Playback tab, find your sound output device and right-click on it.  Select Properties.

Then click on the Spatial Sound tab.

In the Spatial Sound Format section, click on the drop-down menu and select one of the applications available under 3D Sound.

Click OK.
