## How to Factory Reset a Windows 10 PC Using Command Prompt - Guide

The command prompt is an interpreter that can be used to do everything without a GUI.  Unsurprisingly, it can also be used to perform a factory reset.  However, before we start the real reset, we recommend supporting up everything on your PC first.  This ensures that you have a way to restore everything in case something goes wrong during the reset.  A Select an Option dialog opens.  Here you will see two options: Keep my files and Remove everything.

The first option allows you to leave all your files intact while resetting all your settings.  However, the last option will format all your files along with the settings, allowing you to start from scratch.  It can take from minutes to a full hour for the reset to complete, so you may need to wait a while.  Select the desired option.  You will then be asked for confirmation.  Click on it and press Reset.

## How to    Factory Reset Windows 10 PC Using Command Prompt

First, open the Command Prompt.  To do this, type “Command Prompt” in the Windows search bar and click on the Command Prompt application in the search results.

At the command prompt, type this command and press the Enter key.

systemreset –factoryresetq

The Choose an option menu will appear.  Here, you can choose to remove apps and settings while keeping your files, or you can remove everything.  If you want to sell your laptop, you must remove everything.

Then decide if you want to just remove your files or remove your files and clean the drive.  The former is faster but less secure, while the latter takes much longer (it took my laptop about six hours.), but it's much safer.

Note that if you remove the files and clean the drive, it will make it more difficult for someone to recover these files, but it is not impossible.

The next screen will inform you that the PC is ready to be reset.  Click “Reset” to get started.

When the factory reset process is complete, the initial setup screen will appear as if you just took it out of the box.
