The set of numbers are coordinates called longitude and latitude. On their own, these numbers aren't particularly useful. We want to add them to a map instead. There are many ways to enter longitude and latitude in Google Maps and other online maps. That's right, you can go straight to the simplest site on the web google.com and type your latitude and longitude into the search box. Typically, coordinates are listed first with latitude and then longitude. Check that this is the case and that you have placed a comma between the numbers. These are your GPS coordinates shown in decimal degrees. If you want to find that location again on Google Maps, you can search for those coordinates in the search bar.

At the top of the search results, you will see an image that represents these coordinates on a map. In this case, it's somewhere along San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge! Click on the image and you will be taken to the full version of Google Maps of the same place. There is a single map marker where you were looking. In fact, you can go straight to Google Maps and use your search. You can even get directions from one set of coordinates to another. Google Maps treats latitude and longitude like any other search term, allowing you to specify the exact location.

To find a place by its latitude and longitude on any device, just open Google Maps. Launch the Google Maps app on your phone or tablet. On a computer, access Google Maps in a browser. Then enter latitude and longitude in the search field – the same as you would normally use to enter an address.

Google Maps supports latitude and longitude in any of three common formats; use whichever is most convenient:

Degrees, minutes and seconds (DMS): 34° 7' 8.904" N 118° 18' 1.296" W

Decimal degrees and minutes (DDM): 34 7.1484, -118 18.0216

Decimal degrees (DD): 34.11914, -118.30036

Regardless of the format you choose, be careful to format the latitude and longitude values correctly. Here are some guidelines:

For DMS format, use a degree symbol, not the letter d. On a PC, type a degree symbol by pressing Alt+0176 [on the numeric keypad]. On a Mac, press Shift + Option + 8.

For any format, use dots as decimal - don't use commas.

For DD format, be sure to separate lat and long with a comma.

Enter latitude first, followed by longitude.

Latitude must always be between -90 and 90.

The longitude must always be between -180 and 180.
