## How to Fix an iPhone Microphone That Isn’t Working - Guide

Your iPhone's microphone does a ton. It's critical for calls and FaceTime, of course, but beyond that, countless apps rely on the microphone to record audio or tune in requests. Siri needs the microphone to hear you too. On the off chance that the microphone isn't working at all or the sound it's capturing is muted, fluffy, or fuzzy, it can cause a ton of disappointment. Here are the most widely recognized techniques you can use to determine problems with your iPhone's microphone not working.

## How to Fix an iPhone microphone that is not working

Follow these troubleshooting tips in the order listed to diagnose the problem and get your iPhone working again.

Restart the iPhone. Restarting an iPhone can solve many problems, including microphone failure.

Check for blocked openings. All iPhones have at least three microphones. Check the microphone's bottom, front and rear openings to ensure these openings are not covered, blocked or obstructed in any way.

Remove the screen protector or case. Even if the screen protector or case isn't blocking the microphone openings, it can still interfere with the microphone. Remove the case and see if that resolves the issue.

Disconnect all accessories. Disconnect all accessories (such as headphones, headphones, and Bluetooth headphones) connected to the phone and use the microphone again to see if it works.

Try a new headset. Faulty or cheap headphones are often to blame when a microphone isn't working. Use a new headset or pair of headphones and see if that resolves the issue.

Restart communication apps. If the microphone doesn't work with specific apps like WhatsApp and Skype, close the app and open it again.

Give access to the apps microphone. If you use an app like WhatsApp or Skype, make sure the app has permission to access the microphone. To do this, go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone to view all apps that have requested microphone access. Confirm that the app you're having trouble with has microphone access enabled.

Clean the microphone openings. Check to see if the microphone openings are clogged with lint or dust. In this case, use a clean, dry toothbrush to carefully brush the opening.

Test the microphones. Testing microphones individually helps you find or rule out problems with any specific microphone.

Main microphone: Open the iPhone Voice Memo app home screen. Tap the Record icon to record your voice. Stop recording and play it back. If you can hear your voice, the main microphone is working.

Front microphone: Open the Camera iPhone app home screen. Choose the Video option and tap the selfie preview icon (camera). Tap the recording icon to record your voice. Stop recording and go to the Photos app to play the video. If you can hear your voice, the front microphone is working.

Rear microphone: Open the Camera iPhone app home screen. Go to Video option and tap the recording icon to record your voice. (Must be in normal display.) Stop recording. Access the Photos app to play the video. If you can hear your voice, the rear mic is working.

Test the microphones. Testing microphones individually helps you find or rule out problems with any specific microphone. If you find that a microphone is not working, proceed to the next steps.

Update iOS. Sometimes an outdated iOS can interfere with the microphone working properly, and updating the iPhone iOS can solve the problem. To check if iOS is up-to-date, go to Settings > General > Software Update to check for the latest updates and install them.

Restore default settings. Unexpected changes to settings can cause a microphone to stop working. You can resolve this issue by resetting iPhone to default settings. Doing a reset does not erase any data (except Wi-Fi passwords) but you must go back up your iPhone before performing a reset, in case you want to revert to the old settings.

Contact Apple Support. If all else fails, contact Apple to set up an appointment. If your iPhone is under warranty, Apple can fix the problem or replace the phone. Alternatively, have your iPhone serviced at no charge or for a fee, depending on your warranty.
