## How to Free Up Disk Space on Mac - Guide

At some point in every computer's life, there comes a time when it is full of files and programs that slow it down so much that its owner looks for an item like this to rid it of these inconveniences (before throwing it out the window!) .  Don't worry, you've come to the right place.  In this article, you will learn how to free up space on your Mac in 10 steps – deleting unnecessary files and making room for what you really need.

Whether you are tech-savvy or not, anyone can apply these tips to breathe new life into your Mac.  If your Mac's hard drive is exploding out of space for new music, photos, and documents, it's time for a little cleanup.  You can try to manually delete unnecessary files or resort to programs that automate much of the process.  Here it is how to clean  clean up your Mac manually.

## How to    Free Up Disk space on Mac

Click on your Downloads folder, open it in Finder and select the contents or any files you don't need, right-click and choose Move to Bin/Trash.

Open Finder and navigate to your Home folder (press Shift-command-H).  Now press Command-F to open a new Find window.  Click the drop-down menu next to 'Type' and choose 'Other'.  Scroll down until you see "File Size" and check the box next to it.  Click OK.  Now, from the next drop-down menu, choose 'is greater than'.  Change the file size to MB and enter 100 in the box next to it.  Now select anything you don't need that is larger than 100MB and choose Move to Bin/Trash.

could you define up a similar search to exclude files you haven't opened in the last year or so.  Instead of Type, choose Last Opened Date.  Instead of 'is', choose 'before' and change the date to one year ago.  Select and right-click the files that you are sure you won't need again and choose Move to Trash.

If you're like us, your Desktop is a garbage dump.  Open Finder again and choose the Desktop folder.  Sort by size and exclude anything you don't need that is particularly large.  Alternatively, sort by type to quickly find all screenshots (which will be PNG files).  Select the ones you want to delete and choose Move to Trash/Trash.

Another way to delete screenshots is to go to the desktop, and if you haven't already, go to the menu and choose View > Use Stacks (you'll need to select the desktop).  Now find your Screenshot folder.  Click on it to open it up and then select as many screenshots as you want to delete.  You can click and drag them to Trash/Trash.  You can do the same with other files on your desktop (this is where most things end up up in the end).

Now the final and most important step: right click on your Recycle Bin/Trash and choose Empty Recycle Bin/Empty Recycle Bin (we're doing this last as we've just added lots to Recycle Bin!)
