## How to Mute Specific Words and Hashtags on Twitter - Guide

Let's get these trolls out of the way on Twitter.  Or at least try to do so.  And not just trolls, there are “friends” who can't stop sharing spoilers about movies and books.  It has been possible for some time to mute conversations or other accounts on Twitter.  And then it was possible to mute a specific word directly from a tweet.  Things just got easier to use.  Twitter expanded this feature so that when you mute a word or phrase, it doesn't appear on the Explore tab or event-based notifications.

To access it on your iPhone, press and hold the word you want to mute.  Then select 'Mute' from the pop-upup menu, which will take you to a page where you can choose which words (your timeline or notifications) you want to mute, from whom (anyone or people you don't follow) and duration (forever, 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days).

### How to    Mute Words in the twitter app

If you are using the app on a mobile device, follow these steps to mute words and hashtags:

Go to the Notifications tab and select the gear icon.

Select Muted and then Muted words.

You should now see a list of words you silenced.  Select Add.

Enter the word or hashtag you want to mute.  You can only add one word or phrase to your list at a time.

Select whether to mute this word on your timeline, your notifications, or both.

Choose whether the setting will affect tweets from anyone or just people you don't follow.

Tap Duration and choose between Forever, 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days.

Select Save.  You should now see the muted time period next to each of your words.

Select Done.

### How to    Mute Words and Hashtags on Twitter for Desktops

If you're in a browser on a computer, the process is similar, but the UI is different.  to silence words and hashtags, you will first need to select More from the side navigation menu and then go to Settings & Privacy.

Then go to the Privacy & Security tab and select Mute & Block.

Select muted words and select the plus icon.  Now you can type the word or hashtag you want to mute.  You can only add one word or phrase to your list at a time.

When adding a word, select whether to enable it on your timeline, your notifications, or both.

You can also choose whether the setting will affect tweets from anyone or just people you don't follow.

Under Mute Time, choose between Forever, 24 hours from now, 7 days from now, or 30 days from now.

Finally, select Save.

If you change your mind about words you want to mute or you want to edit your list, Twitter lets you do that.  If you are using the app on a mobile device, follow these steps to edit your sound words:

Go to the Notifications tab and select the gear icon.

Select Muted and then Muted words.

Select the word or hashtag you want to edit or unmute.

If you want to edit a word, change the Mute From or Mute time selections and tap Save.

If you want to unmute the word, select Delete word and confirm.

Select Done.

If you're in a browser on a computer, follow these steps:

Select More from the side navigation menu and select Settings & Privacy.

Go to the Privacy & Security tab and select Mute & Block.

So go to Muted words.

If you want to edit a word, choose the word or hashtag you want to edit.

Change the Mute From or Mute time selections and select Save.

If you want to unmute the word, select the mute icon (speaker icon with a red cross).

You should get a small pop-upup at the bottom of the screen that says you turned that word off.

## How to    Mute conversations on Twitter

If you want to stop receiving notifications for a conversation or a sequence of tweets, you can choose to mute it.  You will no longer be notified when people reply and like tweets from that conversation.  However, you can still see the tweets from the conversation in your timeline and when you click on the original tweet.

Follow these steps to mute a conversation, regardless of the device you're using:

View the details of any tweets or replies in the conversation that you want to mute.

Select the More icon (three dots in a horizontal line in the upper-right corner of a tweet).

Select Mute this conversation and confirm.
