### How to    Open Device Manager via Control Panel

Open Control Panel.  In Windows 11, look for it in the search utility on the taskbar.

On some versions of Windows 10 and 8, assuming you're using a keyboard or mouse, the fastest way is through the Power User menu - just press the WIN key (Windows) and the X key together.

Depending on your version of Windows, the Control Panel is usually available from the Start menu or the Applications screen.

What you do next depends on which Windows operating system you are using:

On Windows 11, 10 and 8, select Hardware and Sound.  You can also jump straight to Device Manager via the Advanced User Menu and do not need to go through the Control Panel.

In Windows 7, choose System and Security.

In Windows Vista, select System and Maintenance.

In Windows XP, choose Performance and Maintenance.

On this Control Panel screen, look for and choose Device Manager:

On Windows 11, 10 and 8, check under the Devices and Printers heading.  In Windows 7, look under System.  In Windows Vista, you will find Device Manager at the bottom of the window.

In Windows XP, you have a few extra steps as Device Manager is not as easily available in your version of Windows.  In the opened Control Panel window, select System, choose the Hardware tab, then use Device Manager button.

With Device Manager now open, you can view the status of a device, update device drivers, enable devices, disable devices, or do any of the other hardware management you came here to do.

### Other ways to open Device Manager

If you're comfortable with the command line in Windows, specifically the Command Prompt, a really quick way to launch Device Manager in any version of Windows is via its command:

devmgmt.msc

The command line method really comes in handy when you need to bring up Device Manager, but your mouse doesn't work or your computer has a problem that prevents you from using it normally.

While you'll likely never need to open it this way, be aware that it's also available on all versions of Windows via Computer Management, part of the suite of built-in utilities called Administrative Tools.

Device Manager takes on a slightly different appearance in Computer Management.  Just select it in the left margin and use it as an integrated feature of the utility on the right.

Another method that works on Windows 7 is through GodMode.  This is a special folder that gives access to various settings and controls found throughout the operating system.  If you already use GodMode, opening Device Manager might be your preferred way to access it.
