File Explorer is a GUI component available in Windows 8 that allows users to access, edit and manage data, files and other content stored on a computer or mobile device are saved.  File Explorer has a similar look and feel to its predecessor, Windows Explorer, but has been enhanced with more features and functionality. In addition to using the Desktop Shortcut, Keyboard Shortcut, Taskbar Icon, Start Menu, Power User Menu, Run Command, Task Manager and Cortana, there is one more way to open File Explorer and is using the prominent Windows Command Prompt.  All you need to do is follow the steps below.

Start the command prompt using the Start menu or use the Run command.  Press Windows key + R to open Run and type 'cmd' without quotes to open Command Prompt on your PC.

The command prompt will open and show the default user directory path.

Now type the following command in the command prompt.

The point .  in the command indicates the current directory, while the double .. takes you to the parent folder.  The first command will open the folder in File Explorer that reflects the current directory, while the second command will open the parent folder of the current directory.

Adding a backslash and colon will return a directory.  Here is the command that will look like.
