## How to Rename a Bluetooth Device on Mac - Guide

Bluetooth devices have generic names.  In general, device names differ from one manufacturer to another, but Bluetooth devices of the same make and model have the exact same name.  It is impractical to give each device its own name.  However, users may need different names for their devices, which is why you will find that you can rename a Bluetooth device on your desktop.  You can only rename a Bluetooth device on macOS after it has been paired and preferably when it is connected to your system.  After pairing and connecting a Bluetooth device, open System Preferences.  Go to Bluetooth and right click on the device you want to rename.

From the context menu, choose Rename.  You will get a pop-upup with the device name.  Change the name to whatever you want and click Rename.  The device may disconnect if you rename it.  The process takes no more than a minute.  The renaming persists after system restart and when you disconnect and reconnect the device.  If you remove the device.  however, if you unpair and re-pair, it will appear with the same generic name.

First, click on the Apple logo found in the upper left corner of your Mac's screen.

Select "System Preferences" from the drop-down menu.

Go to the "Bluetooth" settings.

Once the wireless device is connected, right-click on the existing title in the list of paired accessories and select the “Rename” option.

In the pop-up text field, enter the new name for your Bluetooth device.  It can be up to 64 characters long and as short as an emoji.  You can press the keyboard shortcut Command+Control+Space to bring up up the emoji picker.Click the "Rename" button button to save the new name.  This update will not be immediately reflected in the quick settings available in the menu bar.  For this you will have to restart your Mac.
