Microsoft removed the classic volume mixer from its Windows 11 operating system and replaced it with a page in the OS settings application.  The open source Classic Volume Mixer tool restores volume mixer functionality from earlier versions of Windows, such as Windows 10. Windows 11 displays a volume icon in the system tray area by default, just like earlier versions of Windows .  A left click reveals a volume slider you can use to change the volume instantly.  A right click will reveal options, including an option to open the Volume Mixer.

As the registry tweak does not work on Windows 11 to restore the classic sound applet to the volume tray icon, the winareo team has developed a new tool, the Classic Volume Control.  With this little freeware tool, you can bring the good old sound mixer to the latest operating system.

## Classic volume control for Windows 11

Classic Volume Control is a portable freeware application.  After downloading and double clicking the executable, an additional sound icon will appear in the system tray.  This volume icon follows the dark and light appearance of the system tray and applies the corresponding icon when you switch between light and dark modes.  A click on the tray icon opens the classic volume control and a right click on the tray icon;  You can expand the menu.

If you need the classic volume control frequently, select the option “Start automatically” so that, when you enter your computer, this tool will automatically appear in the taskbar.

The right-click menu also includes a volume mixer that lets you control the sound of your audio device and different types of apps when in use.
