## How To Set Routines on Alexa - Guide

### Alexa routine basics

To start creating routines, open the Alexa app for Android or iOS, tap the menu button in the upper left corner and select Routines.  To add a new routine, press + button at the top right corner.  All routines consist of a trigger condition (such as a voice command) and one or more corresponding actions.  start configuring up your trigger by selecting “When this happens.  From here, you'll see five options:

Voice: Triggers the routine with a phrase of your choice, such as “Alexa, good night”

Schedule: Triggers the routine at a specific time on specific days (including weekends only and weekdays only)

Device: Trigger the routine via a compatible motion sensor or contact (currently requires a SmartThings or Echo Plus hub)

Arrive or Leave: Use your phone geolocation to trigger a homework routine or a specific address.

echo Button: Smack one of the greats of Amazon buttons ($20 for a pack of two) to trigger a routine

Context up these triggers is mostly self-explanatory.  Just select one from the list and follow the onscreen instructions.  If you only want a routine to be triggered at certain times of the day, you can also click "Change" next to the "Anytime" section to set up a schedule.  (This applies to device triggers, arrival or departure triggers, and the Echo button).  after setting up a trigger, you can select the associated actions by clicking the "Add Action" button, which offers several options:

Alexa says she will make your Echo say something out loud.  This can be a custom phrase or one of several predefined utterances, such as a joke or a greeting.

Calendar will make Alexa read the current day's schedule, tomorrow's schedule, or just the next event.

Device settings can adjust Alexa volume, stop audio playback, or toggle Do Not Disturb mode.

Messages can send a custom notification to the Alexa app or broadcast a custom message to Echo and Fire TV devices.

Music will play a song, artist or playlist of your choice from Amazon Music, Spotify, iHeartRadio, Pandora or TuneIn.  (If you don't see all of these options, log in to Settings > Music in the Alexa app first.) You can also set a timer to make the music stop automatically after a while.

News will have Alexa read your Flash briefing, which you can customize via Settings > Flash Briefing in the Alexa app.

Smart Home can control your smart lights, locks, thermostat and more as long as you have them configured up with Alexa already.  (If you created any Groups in the Devices tab of the Alexa app, you can also control everything at once.)

Traffic will cause Alexa to read a traffic report, assuming you have set up daily commute details in Settings > Traffic in the Alexa app.

Wait will cause Alexa to pause for a certain amount of time between actions.

The weather will cause Alexa to announce the local forecast.

once you defined up an action, you will go to an Edit Routine menu where you can further customize the Routine.  To make more things happen, press + button next to "Add Action" and select another action from the menu.  You can then press and drag the = button next to any action to rearrange its order, or tap the action itself to modify it.

For certain types of triggers, you can also specify which Alexa device will provide the audio output in the "From" section.  Choose a specific device or select “the device you talk to”, which even works with the Alexa app on your phone.

Finally, notice the “On” toggle at the top of the screen.  Disabling this will disable the routine, so you can temporarily stop running without deleting the whole thing.
