## How to set up and use Home and Away Routines with the Google Assistant - Guide

These routines change all the settings on your smart device to control what the house does when no one is around and what it does when the first person arrives. home. Now that that's out of the way, we can start to define up routines.  Each Home Routine & Away has a tab with all your connected devices below.  Select a device you want to control when someone comes home or is far away.

There will be different actions available depending on the device type.  For example, a light or switch can be turned on or off.  Keep devices in "No Change" if you don't want to include them in a routine.

When you are done customizing device actions for both Home & Away, tap “Next”.

Then you will need to enable your phone to act as a presence sensor.  Google uses your device's location and sensors to know if someone in your house is home or far.  Tap “Next” to proceed.

First, you are asked to grant Google Home app permission to access your device's location.  If you're comfortable with that, tap "I Agree".

A prompt will also ask you to grant the app's location permission.  This may look different from the image below depending on which device you are using.

You can also allow other devices to detect your presence, including Nest Thermostats, Protects, Detects, and Guards.  If you don't have any of these devices, just tap "Next".

If you have some additional presence detection devices, you will see a list of them.  Activate the switch next to whichever one you want to use and tap "Next".

Finally, enter your address and tap “Next”.

A pin will mark the location of your home on a map.  Drag and drop the pin exactly on your home, then tap “Confirm”.
