The company, which also offers a content delivery network, DDoS protection and other security services for businesses, says the DNS service will accelerate up web browsing and improve privacy.  DNS (Domain Name System) is used by computers to convert human-readable domains such as “comparitech.com” into IP addresses.  An IP address is a unique string of numbers and decimals assigned to each device connected to the Internet.

When you enter a website address, a request is sent to a DNS server to determine the IP address of the website associated with that domain name.  This process is called DNS resolution, and it usually takes place on a DNS server owned by your ISP.  An ISP can use information obtained from DNS traffic to find out which websites you have visited, even if you are using HTTPS.

And now that privacy regulations for broadband services in the US have been lifted, Cloudflare is capitalizing on the demand for a private DNS alternative.  If you change your DNS settings to use Cloudflare instead of your default DNS server, your ISP will not be able to spy on your web history or share this information with third parties.

### Change DNS directly on Firestick or Fire TV

In Home-screen from your device, open Settings and scroll to select My Fire TV.

Click About.

Scroll down to hover over Network and take a picture or note the following: SSID, IP Address and Gateway.

Go back to Settings and choose Network.

Hover over your network and click Options button (3 horizontal lines) on your remote to forget about this network.

Click on the Select button button on your remote to confirm.

Scroll down and select Join another network.

Enter the SSID you noted earlier and click Next.

Choose WPA/WPA2 PSK.

Click Next.

Enter your network password and click Advanced.

Enter your previously noted IP address and click Next.

Enter the gateway address noted earlier and click Next again.

Enter 24 for Network Prefix Length and select Next.

For DNS 1, type exactly: 1.1.1.1 and choose Next.

For DNS 2, type exactly: 1.0.0.1 and click Next.

Click Connect.

Return to the network settings on My Fire TV and note that your DNS will now appear as 1.1.1.1.

Go back to device home-screen.

Select Speed ​​Test.

Click Start Test.

Wait for the test to finish and see if your internet speed has improved.
