Windows settings will open on the System > Sound page.  On that page, scroll down to the "Input" section and click on the side-facing cursor (arrow) next to the microphone you want to test.

On the “Properties” screen for the microphone you have selected, scroll down and locate the “Test Your Microphone” section.  Click the "Start Test" button, then speak at a normal volume into the microphone.

If all is well, you will see a blue bar on the “Input Volume” slider swaying left and right as you speak.  If you don't see a blue line moving left and right, it's possible that the microphone is not being recognized correctly by Windows or is faulty.

When the test is complete, you will see the result next to "Start Test" button.  The result is given as a percentage of the total input volume detected by Windows.

Ideally, you want the result to be around 75% of the volume when you speak normally.  If you hit 100% the sound will be distorted and anything below 50% is probably too low.

If your microphone is too quiet, click the “Input volume” slider and turn the volume up.  Likewise, if your mic sounds too loud, lower the volume using the “Input Volume” slider.

Then click “Start Test” again if necessary to make sure your microphone is set to a good input level.
