## How to use and customize a theme in Google Sheets - Guide

It's now easier to find and choose theme colors in sheets and slides, the two Google editors that support themes.  The Theme Colors section is now in the top color picker, and the theme placeholder has been expanded to show the theme name.  Now you can easily identify your corporate brand and use branded theme colors.  Excel allows us to change the design of a workbook.  Applying a theme can change the formatting, font family, size, and color.  cell background color;  and emphasis (bold or italics).  By default, the theme in Excel is “Office”.  Suppose we have the following data – with the Office theme automatically applied – in a spreadsheet and we want to apply a different theme.

To choose theme colors, go to any color picker dropdown menu and click edit button button to your theme's color palette.  In the theme color sidebar, select a color from the drop-down list to start editing.  Note that color changes only apply to the currently selected theme and do not create a new theme.  We hope that this new feature will help you customize your spreadsheet and slide presentations and allow you to incorporate your company's branding colors.

## apply a theme

Excel allows us to change the design of a workbook.  Applying a theme can change the formatting, eg B. Font family, size and color.  cell background color;  and emphasis (bold or italics).  By default, the theme in Excel is “Office”.  Suppose we have the following data – with the Office theme automatically applied – in a spreadsheet and we want to apply a different theme.  As you can see, the data is formatted as a blue styled table and the title is Word Art in blue font.  All fonts are Calibri by default.  Let's say we want to change this theme to some other theme offered in Excel.

On the ribbon, (1) go to the Page Layout tab, (2) click Themes, and (3) choose an offered theme (eg Slice).  Applying the Slice theme changes the cell, object, and table formatting.  The font is now Century Gothic, the Word Art font color is orange, and the table background colors are different shades of blue than they were using the Office theme.

## change a theme

Of course, you will almost always need to change at least one setting to get the layout you want.  Therefore, Excel allows you to change a predefined theme.  You can change elements such as the color scheme and font family.

## Change the color scheme

To change the current theme colors, follow these steps:

On the Ribbon, (1) go to the Page Layout tab, and in the Themes group, (2) click Colors > (3) Customize Colors.

in the pop-up window to change theme colors, you can change the color of different categories.  We will change Accent 1, which will affect the table.

First (1) click the dropdown for Accent 1 and choose the color (eg orange).  Then (2) name the adjusted color scheme (eg “Change color”) and (3) press Save.

After that, the colors of the entire workbook are adjusted according to these changes.  As you can see in the image below, the table colors are changed from blue to orange.

## change font

In a similar way, you can also change a theme's fonts.  To do this, follow these steps:

On the ribbon, (1) go to the Page Layout tab, (2) click Fonts in the Themes group, and (3) choose Customize Fonts.

in the pop-up window set up a font for the title or body text.  For this example, (1) set the body font to “Warning”.  Now (2) name the modified font settings (eg “Custom Font”) and (3) Save it.

You can see in the image below how the color and font changed as per the theme customization.

## Save custom theme

If you want to use the tweaked theme later and/or in other Excel workbooks, save it as a custom theme.

On the ribbon, go to the Page Layout tab, choose Themes, and click Save Current Theme.

in the pop-up save window, choose a name for the custom theme (eg “Custom Theme”).  The theme will be saved as a file in .thmx format.

By default it will be saved in the folder with Microsoft Document Themes and can be used in all Excel workbooks in the future.  If you later apply a theme (Page Layout > Themes), you will see that there is now a custom section with the new custom theme offered.

## Change and customize the theme in Google Sheets

You can also change and adjust the theme in Google Sheets.  To do this, follow the next steps.

In the Menu, go to Format > Theme.

On the right side of the screen, choose a theme.  As a result, the chart theme is changed.

### You can also customize the selected theme

Click Customize in the Themes window to change the default theme.

You can now change the font style, graphic backgrounds and texts.  (1) Change the background color of the chart to light blue, (2) change Accent 1 to red, and (3) click Done.
