Design
To have a look at, the Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 is off to a good – however not nice – start. It doesn’t have quite the identical ‘wow factor’ as flagships from the likes of Samsung or Sony, however; then not everything needs to be new to be good. What the Platinum 7 does have is a professional-looking black finish and a properly patterned, reflective rear. It’s understated, however, feels quite ‘executive, ’ and as a rare shock, the shiny rear panel isn’t too much of a fingerprint magnet.
Display
It’s the identical story with the screen: surprisingly high-end. It has a good and crisp 2K (1440 x 2560) resolution and it’s an AMOLED panel at that. With this in thought, it’s no shock that it also has nice color saturation, deep blacks that almost blend into the decent brightness and bezels. At 5.5”, the screen is also more than giant sufficient for the majority of duties and to be considered a phablet.
Software
Vodafone has filled the Smart Platinum with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, which is to be applauded. Too usually phones in the £250-£350 price bracket, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy A5, operate older versions of Android as the company behind them can’t be worried to upgrade their custom skins.
Hardware and Performance
First, let’s take a closer take a look at the fingerprint sensor. Some have reported finding it hard to locate however I have had no trouble since locating it the first time. It’s also particularly fast and correct and has become my preferred method to unlock the phone, though I have had it stop on me once or twice (which of course always occurs right if you want it to work!).
Vodafone has filled the Smart Platinum 7 with a 3GB of RAM and octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 652. The Snapdragon 652 is the renewed, repackaged version of the company’s 2015 620, giving it a mid-range chip; it’s nowhere near as highly effective as the 820 in the OnePlus 3. However, in real-world use, I didn’t have any serious issues with the Smart Platinum 7’s efficiency.
Camera
The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 appears to have its photographic house in order. We’re looking at a 16-megapixel rear shooter with HDR, a claimed ‘zero second shutter lag’ and phase detection autofocus. It also has an 8MP front camera which comes with its own flash.
Battery Life
For me, the longevity of the 3,000-mAh battery is definitely one of the stars of the show right here and it’s one of the issues that Vodafone is bragging about the most in its marketing. That is pretty impressive, especially considering that it’s working such a good display.
Conclusion
Vodafone has released on its promise of a premium smartphone experience for a less-than-premium price. The Platinum 7 might not be up there with the highest performers in any one area, however, it’s far nearer to the top flagships than it’s to the mid-range also-rans in the areas the place it really matters. The design is solid, when somewhat unremarkable, it’s quick and responsive, and the Smart Platinum 7’s screen is one of the greatest you will get for the money.
