The latest updates for Windows 10 boost the security of the platform, but unfortunately, they also come with annoying bugs that make printing impossible. Microsoft released the buggy updates – KB4560960 and KB4557957 – on June 9, and users started experiencing problems as soon as they installed them. As Bleeping Computer’s notes show, user reports on Reddit and the Microsoft Answers forum show that the problem affects several HP, Canon, Panasonic, Brother, and Ricoh printer models. Some users even reported that they were unable to print files in PDF format.
Microsoft has published a message acknowledging that update KB4557957 allows certain printers to be unable to print. The technology giant warns users that the “print spooler” may make a mistake or close unexpectedly when attempting to print and that there will be no output from that printer. It also tells users that the app may close unexpectedly when trying to print. Finally, it admits that the problem “can also affect software-based printers, such as printing to PDF”.
The company is still working on a solution and promises to provide more information when it rolls one out. For the time being, the affected users will have to replace the driver of their printer or remove the updates from Windows 10 June. Those who take the last route may want to take into account that they will essentially install a lot of security updates. If you remember, Microsoft paused the non-security updates in response to the coronavirus pandemic so that it can focus on the most important ones.
