With iPadOS 13 (well, 13.1.2) out in the wild, you may be wondering what some of the most fascinating features are for the latest and greatest operating system for iPad.
Whether you have an iPad, iPad Pro, iPad Air or iPad mini, read on to get to know the new stuff features and tips to try in iPadOS 13.
1: try dark mode
In dark mode, the entire interface of iPadOS becomes much darker (not surprising, as the name implies), which can make the visual appearance easier for some users, and others may prefer how it looks in general.
You can change the dark mode (and light mode) appearance themes at any time by going to:
Go to Settings> Screen & Brightness> Choose ‘Dark’
Some people like to use dark mode all the time, but otherwise, dark mode works particularly well when set on a schedule to turn on and off automatically from dusk to dawn.
2: Get Home Screen widgets with the Today view
The Today section can now be pinned to the iPad Home Screen so you can quickly glance at it Home Screen for things like weather, reminders, upcoming calendar appointments, stocks, shortcuts and much more. If it is a widget available in the Today section, you can now always have it visible on your Home Screen with the latest iPadOS.
Go to Settings> Display & Brightness> Set “Keep Today Display On” Home Screen ”in the ON position
3: change Home Screen icon size
You can now resize app icons on iPadOS Home Screen. Currently only two options are available; smaller / “More” and “Bigger” / less, but if you’ve ever felt like the iPad home screen icons were too small or too big, now you can adjust them.
Go to Settings> Screen & Brightness> under Home Screen layout choose ‘More’ or ‘Larger’
4: Use a mouse with iPad
One of the best features of iPadOS for many experienced users is the possibility to connect a mouse to the iPad. This works best with a Bluetooth mouse, but if you have a USB cable and a suitable adapter, you can now use a USB mouse with iPad as well.
But first you have to enable this feature (make sure the mouse you want to use is in Bluetooth discovery mode):
Go to Settings> Accessibility> Touch> AssistiveTouch> Devices> tap the mouse to add it to iPad
5: Learn How to Update apps
Many users who have updated to the latest iPadOS and iOS releases are wondering how to update apps, or if the capability is no longer available. Updating apps in iPadOS 13 is still done through the App Store, but now it’s tucked away in a different section of the app.
Go to App Store> tap your profile icon in the top corner> scroll down to find available app updates
6: Connect to File Shares and Servers in the Files App (Mac, Linux, Windows PCs!)
You can now connect to remote file servers on the same network and browse network shares directly from the Files app. Any SMB share can be connected to:
Files app> tap the triple dots button > Select “Connect to server” and enter the destination IP and login details
7: Access to external storage in the Files app
Do you have a USB storage device, SD card, USB flash drive or external drive, or any other storage media that you want to access directly from the Files app on iPad?
Now you can just plug it into the iPad and it will be displayed up in the Files app.
Note that you may need a separate Lightning to USB cable to USB-C to USB adapter depending on your storage device.
8: Try the new image and video editing tools in the Photos app
The Photos app has revised powerful capabilities for quickly adjusting and editing images and videos.
Go to the Photos app> choose a video or photo> tap “Edit”> make any necessary adjustments for things like Brilliance, Saturation, Brightness, Contrast, Sharpness, Tint and many more.
9: Take screenshots of an entire web page
Now you can easily take full screenshots of an entire webpage right from Safari. This is how it works:
Go to Safari> open a website (like compsmag.com)> take a screenshot as usual> tap “Full page” at the top of the preview screen
Keep in mind that capturing screenshots differs per iPad device:
- Take screenshots on new iPad Pro models by pressing Use Volume Up and strength button simultaneously
- Take a screenshot of all iPad models with a Home button by pressing Home button and strength button simultaneously
- Take a screenshot with an iPad with an external keyboard by pressing the Command + Shift + 3 keystroke
10: Download files from Safari to iPad iCloud Drive
Now you can easily download files directly from Safari to iPad and iCloud Drive.
Tap and hold a linked item you want to download, then choose “Download” and confirm that you want to download the file.
Or, if the file is something like a PDF document that’s already open, tap the Share icon (box with an arrow flying out from the top), find and choose ‘Save to Files’ from the list.
You can find the files you download from Safari on the iPad by opening the Files app, going to “iCloud Drive”, then looking in the “Downloads” folder.
