2 Big Reasons Why You Might Want to Buy iPhone 6 Plus Over iPhone 6

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about 2 Big Reasons Why You Might Want to Buy iPhone 6 Plus Over iPhone 6.

Much has been said about the iPhone 6 Plus, and there are many thorough reviews on the hardware, design, camera, and every other minor improvement and detail of the device. After using one for a week, I really notice two things that set the iPhone 6 Plus apart from any other iPhone ever made, and for many users, they could be the determining factor as to why you would want an iPhone 6 Plus about another model. And no, this is not a geek technical preference at all, this is based entirely on two main usage factors.

Real battery that lasts all day

The iPhone 6 Plus is the first iPhone I’ve owned that can easily last a full day and well into the next day on a single charge. Here’s a screenshot of the iPhone 6 Plus battery usage indicator, found in Settings> General> Usage (a really great feature in iOS 8):

The battery life of the iPhone 6 Plus lasts very long

I would say 9 hours of use with 20% battery remaining and 1 day 20 hours of standby time (meaning not using but unplugged) would qualify as really good. In comparison, my replaced iPhone was lucky enough to actually use it for 4 to 5 hours, and I usually had to charge it twice a day and plug it in every night.

If you care about battery life and an all-day device, the iPhone 6 Plus is a big deal. I haven’t done anything special to make it last that long, I don’t turn off any settings or make adjustments to iOS 8 to extend battery life, although I do turn down the super bright and beautiful screen at night put because it’s a bit like staring into the sun in a dimly lit room.

Naturally, batteries age and their capacity diminishes over time. So while it remains to be seen how well the iPhone 6 Plus battery lasts its life, the preliminary experience is very encouraging. If you mainly care about battery life, this is probably the best iPhone out there.

The undeniably huge screen

This is the most obvious thing that immediately stands out when you see an iPhone 6 Plus, a whopping 5.5 ″ of visible screen surface. Yes it is beautiful, it is ridiculously pixel dense and yes it is big. But big can mean two different things; you either see a lot more content on the screen without scrolling around, or, and perhaps a much bigger deal for many of us, things on the screen can really seem a lot bigger. This is a setting choice that you can switch between at any time, choosing either a “Standard” or “Zoomed” image, but the latter is an obvious choice if your eyes tire quickly or your vision is less than 20 / 20. Zoomed-in mode means bigger text, easier reading and at least significantly less eye strain for me.

The main problem with Zoomed mode and the larger UI elements that come with it is that screenshots don’t really show it well. Maybe that’s why Apple doesn’t really emphasize this feature enough on their iPhone 6 page (you’ll find a little ‘Standard vs Zoom’ thing at the bottom of this Display page), but here’s a rough idea of what this means for the Home Screen and app icons:

iPhone standard versus zoomed display mode

Mail app with an email in Standard versus Zoomed (these are examples created in the Settings panel):

Messages app in Standard vs Zoomed (image also clipped from Settings panel):

The zoomed-in mode also works great with settings-based adjustments of text size and bold fonts, both of which have greater readability of the iOS experience than before. Here’s an idea of what the app’s global settings looks like when using the larger text feature – this is with the text size slider about half way down, which means it can get much bigger if your eyesight prefers it:

Settings Text size small versus larger

For someone like me who has less than perfect vision, the difference is significant and meaningful. I know it will be for a lot of other users too, so if you’ve ever squeezed painfully to read small text on a smaller earlier-generation smartphone screen, you don’t have to. Really, for me it means at least that I no longer have to look at micro fonts and no longer have to hold a screen 6 ″ from my face to see details of an app or a photo.

It’s hard to stress that screenshots don’t do this part of the iPhone 6 Plus justice. If you’re curious about this yourself, get an iPhone 6 Plus from an Apple Store or retail store and play with the two most impressive displays features. Go to Settings> Display & Brightness> Picture> and choose “Zoomed”, and while in Display & Brightness settings try increasing the text size and using bold text. Then take a look around iOS and apps, you will see that everything is much bigger.

So after using iPhone 6 Plus for a week, I think it’s a really great iPhone and I’m happy with it. The concern I’ve heard from most people is that the iPhone 6 Plus is too big, and the truth is, it could be for some users. If you’re looking for a one-handed only device that you can usually keep in a small, tight jeans pocket, the iPhone 6 Plus probably won’t fit. It’s big, can be tricky to use with one hand at times (even with fairly large hands), and it’s evident in most slimmer trouser pockets. But if you’re like me and the iPhone isn’t usually in your pocket all day, those tradeoffs don’t mean that much, especially compared to the dramatically improved readability and better battery life. Whether it is right for you depends on several things but those are two big issues for me, overall I think most people would be better off seeing the two devices in person and then making up their mind.

Oh and by the way, whether you decide to buy an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, I would recommend the 64GB model over the 16GB model. If you’ve ever worried about the storage capacity for apps or photos, having that extra 48 GB of storage capacity is fantastic.
