So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about 5 Command Key Tricks for OS X to Improve Your Mac Workflow.

The Mac command key, which sits next to the spacebar and has that funky-looking icon logo, is often used for initiating keyboard shortcuts in OS X. But that command key also has good usability tricks up the cover that is less known and underused, many of which can help with your overall workflow in OS X and the Finder. Here are five particularly useful tips using the command key.

1: Open sidebar items in a new window with Command + click

Hold down the Command key and click on a shortcut item in the Finder sidebar to open it in its own new window.

Open Finder sidebar items in a new window

This works with any sidebar item, be it under Favorites, Shared, or Devices, and is extremely useful when you need to copy or move files within the file system. It’s also much faster than opening a new window and then navigating to locations.

2: Move Windows in the background with Command + Drag

Want to reveal something in the background, but don’t want to lose focus from your primary window or app? No problem, just hold down the Command key and drag the title bar of the background window … you can move the window without changing the focus, and without interfering with what’s going on in the foreground.

Little is known about this trick that’s been around for a while, and it’s surprisingly useful.

3: Reveal a Dock item in the Finder with Command + click

Wondering where that Dock item is stored in the OS X Finder? Just Command + click to find out, you will immediately jump to the respective location of the items in Mac OS X.

This includes apps, folders, documents – whatever is stored in the OS X Dock if you hold down the Command key while clicking on it, it will jump to its respective location in the Finder.

4: Open a Spotlight result in Finder with Command + Return

Just like with the Dock tip, if you hold down the Command key when selecting something in the Spotlight menu, it will immediately jump to that file location in the Finder instead of launching the file / app.

Open Spotlight search results in the Finder

This makes for a great quick workflow to instantly find files for changes: hit Command + Spacebar, search for your item and hit Command + Return to open the Finder window containing the document in question.

5: Select files that are not next to each other

By holding down the Command key, you can select files that are not next to each other. We recently covered this in an in-depth explanation of the different ways to select multiple files in Finder, but it’s worth repeating as it’s an overlooked feature that should get more use.

You can also use it in reverse to deselect files.
