So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about 5 Great Tips for Working on a Mac at Night or in Low Light.
Are you a nighttime Mac user? Many of us are, and macOS has a lot of great stuff features that can improve computing experiences in low light.
Whether you work in the dusk or late evening, or even just in a dark room, we’ll share with you some helpful tips to make Mac use in low light even better. You may find this one tricks helps you to reduce eye strain and may even make you more productive!
Note that some of these features are limited to macOS Mojave 10.14 and later, like the full Dark Mode theme, but the same general principles apply to other Mac OS versions as well.
1: Lower the screen brightness manually
Many of the Mac displays are extremely bright, which looks great and allows for vivid colors and screen images, but at night or in low light, you probably want to reduce that screen brightness significantly.
You can use the keyboard brightness controls or adjust the brightness from the Display preference pane on the Mac.
Another great benefit of reducing screen brightness is for Mac laptops, where you’ll almost certainly notice a significant increase in battery life while the screen is more dim.
2: Use Night Shift for a warmer screen tone
Night Shift is great feature this heats the screen colors of a Mac in the evening and at night, so that the screen emits less blue light. There are many proven benefits to reducing blue light exposure, and you may even notice less eye strain when using Night Shift.
Enabling night shift on Mac is done through the Display preference pane, setting it on a schedule or tuning in to the day and night hours is an easy way to rate the app as it turns on automatically. In general, the warmest setting provides the best results for most users.
For Macs without Night Shift support, you can also use Flux for a similar effect
3: Use dark mode to reduce bright interface elements
Dark mode takes all the bright white and light gray UI elements on a Mac and turns them dark gray, which is perfect for working at night and in low light. Enabling dark mode on the Mac is easily done through the “General” preference pane in MacOS.
Currently, you have to manually turn dark mode on and off when you want to use it, but maybe a future version of macOS will enable automatic dark mode, similar to how Night Shift and Dynamic Desktops work.
For Mac users who don’t have the full Dark Mode theme, earlier versions of Mac OS provide the option to enable a dark menu bar and Dock.
4: Use dark wallpapers or dynamic desktops
Dynamic Desktop automatically changes the background with the time of day, with a darker image in the evening and night hours. This helps to reduce the brightness of the screen, making it easier for the eyes to stare at a screen. It also looks great.
Dynamic desktops are enabled in the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane.
If you don’t have or like Dynamic Desktops, setting a dark background can have the same effect as reducing the amount of brightness coming from the screen.
5: Surfing the web? Use Safari Reader mode
Safari Reader mode is excellent for many reasons, but if you surf the web or read the web at night, posting an article in Safari Reader is fantastic as you can theme the Reader to match dark mode on the Mac and black becomes white text and these change to white on dark gray or white on black.
Enabling Reader mode in Safari is a matter of clicking the Reader button in the URL bar of a web page, and then click the “aA” button to customize the look of Safari Reader on Mac, including changing color scheme, fonts and text size (using larger text at night is easier on the eyes for many of us).
Oh and if you’re on the web and using YouTube, you can try the YouTube dark mode theme too.
Not related to working at night, but another fantastic Safari Reader tip is for printing article content only, without ads or other page content that may use unnecessary printer ink.
