macOS Sierra has many new ones features and improvements, some of which are significant and others less important but still nice to have. We’ve picked a handful features new to macOS Sierra that you are sure to enjoy and actually use, read on and check them out.
Obviously, you must have macOS Sierra installed to access it features.
1: Siri on the Mac
Siri is now on the Mac, which is perhaps the most obvious new one feature in Sierra, and it’s pretty handy too! You can access Siri from the menu bar by clicking the colorful icon in the top right corner of the screen, or by clicking the large Siri button in the Dock.
You can ask Siri on the Mac to get the weather forecast, who directed a movie, sent a message, can get game times for sporting events, recently worked on documents, and a lot more. Most Siri Shortcuts work the same as what’s available on iPhone and iPad, so check out this massive list of Siri Shortcuts for ideas if you’re new to the virtual assistant, and many of the types of questions you’d take to Spotlight you can also ask Siri.
2: Image in image web video
Picture in Picture mode lets you play a floating video on screen, providing a more minimalistic viewing window for watching a web video or movie without having to open a full Safari or Netflix window.
To access the Picture in Picture (PIP) web video, right click on a playing web video and choose “Enter Picture in Picture” (for YouTube, right click twice) and the video will be displayed.up in a small PiP window that you can drag on the screen.
This one feature is also available on the iPad, and older versions of Mac OS can get Picture in Picture with an app called Helium.
3: Cross iOS to Mac (and vice versa) clipboard
The new Mac to iOS and iOS to Mac clipboard is incredibly useful, you can copy and paste between a Mac and an iPhone, or an iPhone and an iPad, and then back to a Mac, and any any other combination you can imagine. The copy / paste is done seamlessly through iCloud and works quite well, just copy in one location, paste in another, it just works.
To use the cross-Mac to iOS clipboard, make sure the devices you want to use it with are using the same Apple ID with iCloud turned on, Bluetooth turned on, Handoff turned on, and they have iOS 10 ( or later) on the iPhone or iPad, and you need macOS 10.12 (or later). Meeting those basic requirements is essential to using the great clipboard feature.
4: Recommendations for storage and optimization
MacOS now includes one feature that can help discover where your disk space has disappeared. You can see how much space Applications, Documents, iTunes, Mail, Photos, Recycle Bin, other users, System and other items in the file system are taking up up.
Go to the Apple menu and choose “About This Mac” then go to the “Storage” tab. Next to your primary Macintosh HD you will see ‘Manage’ button, this will give you access to the new storage optimization screen.
You will also find options to store things in iCloud (highly recommend having a very fast and very stable internet connection if using this feature), reduce clutter, automatically empty trash and optimize storage by ditching old iTunes crud.
The utility is a bit like a simpler version of OmniDiskSweeper or DaisyDisk, but it’s built into macOS and doesn’t require any downloads.
5: Login with Apple Watch
If you’re a Mac user who also has an Apple Watch, you can quickly sign in to your Mac with your Apple Watch by doing nothing but wearing it and waking up the Mac.
You must have enabled Apple ID two-factor authentication to access it feature, then make sure it is checked in the Security preference pane on the Mac.
6: Keep folders on top with Finder Sorting
Have you ever wished you had folders at the very top of a directory list when using the Finder list view? Finally you can, if you use the sort element “name” anyway. This is a small one feature but it is surprisingly useful, and something many of us have longed for for centuries.
You can find this setting in the Finder> Finder menu> Preferences, under the “Advanced” options.
7: iMessage Link Examples
Your friend sends you a URL in iMessage without a description … do you click to find out what it is? Is it SFW or NSFW? Are you ignoring it? Or do you ask for clarification about what you are going to dive into? This scenario is common, but now with macOS Sierra, the Messages app will try to display a small link preview for each URL pasted and sent in Messages for Mac.
Now you don’t have to wonder anymore, with the URL message preview at least you have an idea of what you are going to click. Relief! This great little feature also exists in iOS 10.
