So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about 7 Steps to Prepare for iOS 10 Update on iPhone or iPad.
The latest and greatest release of iOS 10 is here, and with the public release just around the corner, it’s a great time to prepare your iPhone and iPad hardware to install the iOS 10 update.
Let’s go through some important steps to properly prepare for the iOS 10 update, including checking for supported hardware, doing a bit of cleaning, making sure enough backups have been made, and then of course diving right into the installation .
1: Check for device compatibility
Obviously, if the device doesn’t support it, then no update, so your iPhone or iPad support iOS 10 too?
Chances are, this is the case, and if the iPhone is a 5 or later, or the iPad is an Air or Mini 2 or later, it will be supported. However, only the latest model iPod touch is supported.

2: Clean house and get rid of the dusty apps
It’s always a good idea to clean the house and toss out any long-drawn-out old apps before installing a new iOS software release on an iPhone or iPad.
Remove apps that are old and old that are stuck on the device and not being used. If you haven’t used it in months and don’t think you need it, remove it. You can always download them again later if you change your mind.
3: Install available app updates
If you’re anything like me, you have a dozen or more app updates that are the big red notifier button the App Store icon. It’s easy to slow down when installing app updates, but when a major software version is available it’s finally time to dust off the App Store and get those updates going.
Don’t forget to visit the Updates tab of the App Store to install updates for the remaining apps. Many apps have been updated to support the latest and greatest releases of iOS system software, so don’t skip them.
4: Provide adequate device storage
The iOS 10 download is about 2 GB and requires some extra space to install, so try to have about 2.5 GB or more for free when downloading and installing the update. No, that doesn’t mean it will last up as much space as it finishes, it just needs space to download, install, and process the update, and much of that space will be available again once the update is complete.
The aforementioned process for removing old apps will likely be free up some space, but if you have a lot of videos and photos on the device, you may want to copy the photos from iPhone or iPad to Photos app on Mac or you can use Image Capture on Mac or transfer them to a Windows too pc. Media is often the largest storage space on a device, so if you’re short on space, consider your picture and movie library.

5: Back Up! Back-up, back-up
This is perhaps the most important thing to do. You probably already make regular backupsup from the iPhone or iPad, right? If not, you should. And you absolutely must back-up the device before installing any software update, especially for the major release updates. Don’t skip this, it’s crucial.
The easiest way to backupup iPhone or iPad is with iCloud, which you can do from the Settings app> iCloud. You can also use iTunes to backupup create on a computer. If you want to be extra safe, back upup to both. If you’ve never done this before, you can learn how to back up an iOS device here, covering both iTunes and iCloud.
If you skip backups and something goes wrong, you can lose all your data. That’s about as disastrous as it can get, and no one wants to lose personal data, pictures, notes, and everything else that’s important that’s stored on an iPhone or iPad, so don’t skip backups. It’s a minimal effort for a lot of peace of mind and data security.
6: Install iOS 10!
Now you are ready to install iOS 10! The iOS 10 release date is September 13, so you’d like to get cleaned up up and supported up before Tuesday if you want to install on the first day. The update will be made available in the Settings> General> Software Update section of iOS, and you can also install iOS 10 through iTunes by connecting an iPhone or iPad to a computer.
It’s worth mentioning that for the incredibly impatient, they don’t have to wait. As it turns out, anyone can download and install iOS 10 GM right now by signing up for the public beta program, but for most users, it’s a better bet to just wait for the official release on September 13. Signing up for the public beta program means the device will also get future beta updates, which is usually not wanted by an average user.
7: Or…. Do you have to wait?
Do you really need to update to iOS 10? That’s totally up up to you to decide. If your iPhone or iPad works great as it is now, you can always delay the update or even avoid it altogether. But by skipping iOS 10, you’d obviously miss out on big novelties features, built-in security enhancements and any bug fixes in the release.
Another approach is to wait. Some users like to wait to install major iOS software updates until the first point release or bug fix update is available. That could mean a minor point release, perhaps like iOS 10.1 or iOS 10.0.2 or something similar, which usually arrives a few months after the first major build. This approach is really for people who like to be extra careful and have any theoretical major bugs or potential issues that have slipped through the beta periods fixed before jumping in on their own.
There’s nothing wrong with the cautious approach, it’s just a matter of preference whether or not it suits you, your hardware, and your usage situation.
