So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about A Quick & Easy Email Navigation Trick All iPhone Users Should Know.

While it’s becoming more common to get overwhelmed in the ocean of emails, the Mail app in iOS packs a really great feature to help you navigate between and scan tons of emails very quickly. The navigation feature features prominently in the Mail app, and while many users are already aware of this, it seems hugely underused and often downright unknown to a host of other iPhone owners. It’s too handy not to point it out, so we’re going to show you the fastest way to switch emails in iPhone Mail app.

As mentioned, navigation is a very prominent one feature in the Mail app: It’s those little arrow icons in the corner of an open email message on your iPhone screen.

The downward pointing arrow can be seen as a previous one button, while the upward pointing arrow can be seen as Next button. This is what we’re specifically talking about, if, like many iOS users, you’ve overlooked the arrow buttons:

Go to the next or previous email in the iOS Mail app

Just tap one of these arrows to navigate back and forth in your email. This is a piece of cake to try for yourself:

  1. From the Mail app as usual, then open the top email (you can open any email, but the most recent message often works best)
  2. Use the Up and the down arrow in the top corner of the Mail app screen to move back and forth between the previous and next emails in the inbox

Super easy and very fast, right? This basically prevents you from having to go back to the original inbox and then tap a new message. Instead, the next (or previous) message is immediately loaded on the screen.

Navigate to next and previous emails in Mail for iOS

You can use this to quickly scan tons of emails on an iPhone using the navigation buttons, every email opened for a moment is marked as read, which can really help reduce the email overload if you really want to review things instead of just stopping it and marking everything read.

With something so simple and with the buttons actually right in front of everyone’s face when an email message is opened on an iPhone, you wonder why this is not well known. Maybe the arrows look too subtle because after showing this to a friend recently (who was annoyed by tapping back to the mail inbox and then repeatedly tapping on a new email), they said they were the little arrow icons in the Mail screen. Even if a user has the Show Button Form feature enabled in iOS to make tap targets stand out, the arrow icons are not marked or clearly indicated as a button. Another possible point of confusion is that users coming from the Gmail for iPhone app have a very similar arrow button in the corner of an email, except that in the Gmail app, it brings up a drop-down menu with additional email options and isn’t used at all for navigation. So whether it’s just the feature, or confusion about what it does, it’s probably less used than it should be. At the very least, you should know that it exists and it works remarkably well for browsing tons of emails in the iOS Mail app.

To be clear, this quick email navigation trick is not limited to the iPhone, it is probably most useful in the single window view of Mail app of iPhone and iPod touch. The larger screen and two-panel email screens on iPad and iPhone Plus still have the next / previous buttons, however.

This is a feature which the Mac Mail app could use as well, but if you’re using a computer in the meantime, you’ll have to rely on keyboard shortcuts to navigate between OS X Mail messages.
