Check tutorial of How to Add the Date to the Menu Bar in Mac OS X
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Add the Date to the Menu Bar in Mac OS X.
You can adjust the menu bar clock that appears in the top right corner of your Mac to include more than just the current time, and one of the more useful things you can add is the current date. This is especially useful in OS X because unless you have the Calendar app open all the time, you really have to click the clock to open the menu to see the date and day of the week on Mac.
Show the current date in the Mac menu bar
Modern versions of OS X make this adjustment very easy, and the current date appears next to the current time. Here’s everything you need to enable this:
- Go to the Apple menu and open System Preferences
- Go to the “Date and Time” preference pane and then choose the “Clock” tab
- Check the box next to “Show Date” to have the date immediately appear in the menu bar
- Exit System Preferences when you are satisfied
Checking that box will immediately display the date:
As you can see, the date is displayed next to the clock, but the actual name of the day of the week is truncated by default to better fit the Mac menu bar. The year is also not displayed by default. If you feel like it, you can change that (and other options, like adding emoji to make the clock a little quiet) by going to the “Language & Region” preference pane and browsing the Advanced options.
Another option is to install a third-party app, such as Day-O, which puts a full calendar in OS X’s menu bar, a feature which is so handy that it should frankly be built into the Mac menu bar by default.
This is the same in any modern version of Mac OS X, from 10.6 through OS X Yosemite 10.10. But of course we’re not going to overlook old versions, so if you’re still in the older generations you can still make this tweak …
Add the date to the menu bar in earlier OS X versions
This is taken from an article published a while ago, it is included here as it is still relevant to some Mac users with older machines:
Depending on which version of OS X you’re running, the exact parameters may differ slightly, but it’s the same concept. In fact, earlier versions of OS X don’t put the option in the date and time preferences at all. Instead, really old versions should launch System Preferences and then visit the ‘International’ preference pane followed by the ‘Formats’ tab … then click on ‘Customize’ button in the Times panel. Likewise, to display the date in the active format, extract the date information from the International -> Formats -> Dates panel. Here you can change the appearance of the time format, add the date (in a format you specify), or add a custom message.
The “International” formats also allow further customization of the clock item in the menu bar by selecting customize button. You can paste the items you want to display, or you can even add static text if you want, such as “OSXDAILY Rules!” or something. The end result can be anything you want.
Thanks for the tip idea Steve!
