So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Add a Recent Items Menu Stack to the Dock of Mac OS X.

You can add a menu stack of recent items to the Mac OS X Dock using a standard write command. The default is “Recent Applications”, but once the Dock item exists, you can adjust it feature also other recent items such as recent files, recent items, recent servers.

This is a neat one feature that works in all versions of Mac OS X, so let’s show you how to enable it with a default string from the command line.

How to Enable a Dock Stack for Recent Items in Mac OS X

Launch the terminal in / Applications / Utilities / to get started.

Copy and paste the following syntax on a single line at the terminal prompt, make sure it’s all on the same line, you can also type it if you want, but the syntax is a bit programmatic in appearance which can make it tricky to write to some users:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add ‘{“tile-data” = {“list-type” = 1; }; “Tile-type” = “recents-tile”; } ‘

That should all be on one line, so when you copy and paste it, make sure the command is one string. Press enter to run the command.

You will then need to kill the Dock, this will allow the change to take effect by restarting the Dock process:

killall Dock

Now right click on the newly appeared Dock item ‘Recent Applications’, it will have appeared next to the trash can icon.

You can change this in recent applications, recent documents, recent servers, favorite volumes, or favorite items. If you want more than one, just run the command on the terminal again.

This menu item will remain in the Dock for as long as you want.

To remove the Recent Items menu, drag it out of your Dock like any other Dock item in Mac OS X.

Neat huh? Thanks to Sean for the entry, if you know of another cool one tricks or standard commands, let us know!
