Check tutorial of Add a Spacer to the Mac OS X Dock

So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Add a Spacer to the Mac OS X Dock.

You can add empty spacers to the Mac OS X Dock by issuing a standard write command in the Terminal. This allows you to tweak the look of the Dock a bit, since each spacer is about the same width as an icon, except nothing takes the place of the space, it simply separates other Dock icons.

You can see the effect in the screenshots included with this article, where spacers have been inserted, visible as holes in the Mac OS X Dock between different icons.

How to Add Spacers to the Dock in Mac OS X

This works to create spaces in the Dock for all versions of Mac OS X, here’s what you’ll want to do:

  1. Launch the Terminal application in / Applications / Utilities /
  2. To get a single spacer, copy and paste the following command into the Terminal:

    defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add ‘{“tile-type” = “spacer-tile”;}’

  3. You then have to kill the Dock and restart it for the spacers to appear, you can do this with the following command:
  4. killall Dock

  5. The effect is immediate and a spacer appears that you can move yourself in the Dock

If you want multiple spacers, enter the standard write command the same number of times. For example, if you want 5 spacers, enter the command five times and then kill the Dock for the changes to take effect.

Instead of using the command again, you can do this by pressing the “UpBringing arrow on your keyboard inside the Terminal up the previously executed commands, just press UP until you see the default writing sequence, then hit return again.

The Dock spacers can be repositioned by simply dragging them around the Dock just like any other icon. Likewise, you can remove the spacers by simply dragging them from the Dock.
