So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Add & Type Symbols, Glyphs, and Special Characters to the iOS Keyboard.

There are many additional symbols, characters and glyphs available on iOS that are not directly accessible, but adding a new keyboard gives you access to the glyphs and symbols. This includes fun characters like the  Apple logo and smiley face ☺, and while there is some resemblance to emoji, these symbols and glyphs are different from the Emoji keyboard, which is also accessible to iPhone and iPad users. In addition, a third-party web app is available that gives you quick access to a handful of special symbols via iOS too, and we’ll show you how to use either to access and type these other characters in iOS.

Access glyphs, symbols and characters with the keyboard in iOS

Glyphs and certain unique characters can be typed natively on iPhone by adding an optional keyboard, similar to adding support for Emoji icons to iOS:

  • Open Settings and go to “General”
  • Choose “Keyboard”, then tap “Add New Keyboard …” and select “Japanese (Kana)”
  • Now tap the globe from any keyboard input location until you are on the Japanese keyboard, then tap ABC then tap 123 to display the glyph drawing screen

Some additional symbols can be accessed by simply tapping and holding one of the numbers, and to access other symbols you must tap a single number or symbol multiple times. If multiple symbols are available, you can tap the upward-pointing arrow to reveal a screen full of those glyphs:

Some characters and characters are fairly buried, and others need to be accessed by typing something that is then replaced with a character. For example, to type the  Apple logo in iOS this way, type “appuru” from the Japanese Kana keyboard, which is then replaced with the Apple logo. Of course, that’s a lot more difficult than typing on a Mac, which is just done by a keyboard combination, and hopefully future versions of iOS will make opening and typing the special characters and glyphs easier on all native keyboards in iOS.

Add Glyphboard for easier copying and pasting of symbols

Another option that doesn’t require you to add new keyboards or mess with weird characters and glyphs is to use a free web app called GlyphBoard. It is very easy to use:

  • Go to this URL from an iPhone or iPad (the Glyphboard does not appear outside of iOS) and add it to your home screen as a bookmark
  • Start Glyphs from the home screen and tap and hold a glyph to copy it and use it elsewhere

Glyphs and Symbols in iOS with Glyphboard

Glyphboard makes it a lot easier to type many quirky characters “☂, ☺, ✔, ♫”, from spades, hearts, clubs, yin and yang symbols, phones, leotard logos, skull and crossbones, snowmen, stars, airplanes, umbrellas, Apple logo, music notes, faces, peace symbols and more, all are laid out in a very accessible way, eliminating the guesswork required with the Japanese keyboard method.

Even with Glyphboard on your iPhone or iPad, you will find that the total number of special characters and symbols available for iOS is limited compared to the Mac, but that can change over time.
