Check tutorial of Always Show Scroll Bars in Mac OS X
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Always Show Scroll Bars in Mac OS X.
The scroll bars in new versions of OS X are hidden until activated by use, that is, by scrolling, making them invisible by default. This is the new default behavior that works really well if you mainly use a trackpad with your Mac. However, I use an external mouse with my Mac quite often, and I find the hidden scroll bars annoying when I do. That’s my reason for bringing them back, but other people just want to see when there’s content available that needs to be scrolled to access it.
So fast tip will please users who want to see constantly available scrolling areas by displaying the scroll bars all the time in Mac OS X.
How to Set scroll bars to display all the time in Mac OS X
This will make the scroll bars always show if there is content in windows that needs to be scrolled to access, this applies to all windows and all apps on the Mac:
- Launch System Preferences from the Apple menu
- Click on the “General” settings panel
- Look for ‘Show scroll bars’ and select the radio box next to ‘Always’
- Close System Preferences when done
Scroll bars are immediately visible with this change, and they will now always be visible when there is a scrollable portion of a window:
While in the settings panel, you may want to do this tip take it a step further and adjust the click behavior in the scrollbar as well, but I’m fine with the default setting here to jump to the next page.
Hiding the scroll bars makes the UI a bit more minimalist and more in line with iOS, but on the desktop, it just makes more sense for some users to see them constantly.
All this really does is revert the scroll bar behavior in modern versions of OS X to what existed in Mac OS 10.6 and earlier, that is, the scroll bars are always visible. This change has been made and the scrollbar settings will remain and work in all modern versions of Mac OS, including OS X 10.7 Lion, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, OS X Mavericks 10.9, OS X Yosemite 10.10 and higher. The settings window interface may look slightly different depending on the version of Mac software, but it always comes in new versions. Here’s what it looks like prior to the Yosemite redesign:
Going forward, it’s safe to expect this to be the new default scrollbar behavior as iOS and OS X share more and more features, but as long as we continue to have the easy option to use the feature back to have our scroll bars always visible, it’s not too bad.
