Check tutorial of Audio & Sound Not Working in Mac OS X? It’s an Easy Fix
So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Audio & Sound Not Working in Mac OS X? It’s an Easy Fix.
A few Mac users updating to Mac OS X find that their sound and audio output stops working, leading to a completely muted Mac that doesn’t respond to the volume keys. Fortunately, the mysterious missing sound output problem is incredibly easy to fix, and there’s nothing really wrong with the Mac.
First of all, make sure Mac audio output is turned on and the computer is not muted. You can mute the sound button on a Mac keyboard or use the Sound control panel to amplify the sound all the way up to make sure the Mac sound volume is not muted. Sometimes the Mac is just muted, which of course if mute is on, the audio output is not working and the sound is not playing. If you’ve already ruled that out, then move on to the following simple troubleshooting steps.
How to Fix Audio and Sound not working on Mac
Here is how to quickly fix missing audio output on Mac. And yes, this applies to all Macs with all types of speakers; internal, external, headphones, earbuds, etc:
- Go to the Apple menu and choose “System Preferences”, then select the “Sound” panel
- Select the “Output” tab
- Select “Internal Speakers” as the output device *
- Adjust the sound as usual, it will now work as intended
* If you’ve connected external speakers or headphones up, you might want to select it instead. Note that you may need to choose “Internal Speakers” first and then select the external speaker or headphones for the audio output to work as intended.
Why is this happening? It is probably a simple bug where a different audio output channel is selected or chosen during the installation or update process. This seems to happen most often with Macs that have used HDMI output to a display or TV with speakers. Interestingly, the reverse situation can also occur, where a Mac is connected to a TV and there is seemingly no audio output, at least until HDMI is selected as the correct audio channel.
Method 2: fix missing Mac audio / sound by connecting and disconnecting from Mac headphone jack
Like the above trick failed to return your sound and audio to a Mac, try the following tip, which requires headphones or another speaker system:
- Connect headphones to the headphone jack on the Mac
- Open iTunes (or any other music player) and start playing music or audio
- Now pull the headphones out of the headphone port on the Mac
- The audio should now play through the Mac’s built-in speakers, if not, return to iTunes to play the song again
The above two tips should restore the audio and sound output to a Mac. Usually selecting the correct audio output in the Sound settings of System Preferences is sufficient, but sometimes you may need to go further and toggle a physical connection in and out of the headphone jack
This was first reported a while ago by early adopters using beta versions of various macOS versions, but it still seems to happen randomly even with installing the latest releases of macOS from Mac OS X Yosemite with a wide variety of Macs. Occasionally, the same situation randomly occurs after installing an update for MacOS. Just remember if you are experiencing this is not a cause for alarm, it is an easy fix.
