So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about How to Block All Incoming Network Connections in Mac OS X.

The Mac OS X Firewall offers an optional ability to block all incoming network connections, providing a significant security boost to Macs located in untrusted networks or hostile network environments.

Because this is the strictest level of preventive network access possible in Mac OS through the built-in Mac firewall, it is ideal use for situations where the default would be to not trust incoming network connection attempts. Accordingly this is simply too strict to be practical for average users in most environments, but at least it’s worth knowing how to switch it feature should it ever become necessary.

Block all incoming network connections in Mac OS X

This feature is available in all versions of Mac OS:

  • Open System Preferences from the  Apple menu and choose the “Security & Privacy” panel
  • Select the “Firewall” tab, then click the lock icon in the corner to log in and allow changes
  • Choose ‘Enable Firewall’ if it is not already enabled, then choose ‘Firewall Options’
  • Firewall options allow you to control blocking of connections

  • Select the top option “Block all incoming connections”

Block all incoming connections in Mac OS X with this firewall option

As noted by the preference pane, when enabled, this blocks all network connections to the Mac, including all sharing services, all network file sharing, screen sharing, remote access, remote login and remote connectivity via SSH and SFTP, iChat Bonjour, AirDrop file transfer, iTunes music sharing, ICMP requests and responses – literally anything that comes in that is not required for basic Internet connection and maintenance.

Blocks incoming connections, not broadcasts

It is important to note that this setting does not prevent the Mac from broadcasting its presence on a network if there is a particular network features are enabled (such as file sharing, AirDrop, Samba for Windows sharing, etc.) and it does nothing to prevent outgoing connections, it only affects incoming connection attempts from all non-essential internet services.

For a specific example; if a user left File Sharing enabled but blocked all incoming connections to the firewall, the Mac would still be listed up on network scans, but no one would be able to connect to it.

If you also want to block the Mac from broadcasting its presence on a network, just go to the “Sharing” preference pane and turn off the services that reveal its presence.
