So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Can’t Save Pictures in Safari on iPhone XS, XR, X, iPhone 8, iPhone 7? Here’s Why!.

Some newer iPhone users have found they seemingly unable to save images from the web in Safari on iPhone. Usually the attempt to save a web photo goes like this; an iPhone user is trying to touch and hold an image on the web, but instead of the familiar ‘Save’ and ‘Copy’ menu appearing on the screen, the image appears to float above the webpage with a small arrow on it , and then it will eventually open in a new window with the image. This is often the case with any image that is also a link.

Rest assured that you can keep saving images from Safari directly to an iPhone, and the method you already know is what you’ll be using. That probably sounds confusing, so let’s explain a little bit as newer iPhone models work a little differently.

Why can’t I save images from the web on iPhone XS, iPhone XR, XS Max, X, iPhone 8, Plus, iPhone 7 Plus, etc.?

If you are trying to save an image from the web with Safari to a newer iPhone by tapping and holding trick, and you notice the image popping up up in a new screen window instead of up the Save menu, the reason is 3D Touch.

3D Touch is one featured introduced a while ago which allows the iPhone screen to be pressure sensitive – not only touch sensitive, but also pressure sensitive. The extra pressure sensitivity of 3D Touch ensures that a stronger pressure activates other actions than you may be used to. This applies to all newer iPhone models with 3D Touch, including iPhone XS Max, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, or iPhone 6S and iPhone 6s Plus, and presumably moving forward. Older iPhone and all iPad models don’t have 3D Touch, so they won’t notice this interactivity change.

I just want to save images from the web to my iPhone and I don’t care about 3D Touch, how do I go back to the old way?

If you don’t like how the iPhone screen is now sensitive to both pressure and touch, it is best to disable 3D Touch on iPhone.

  1. Open the “Settings” app on the iPhone
  2. Go to “General” and then “Accessibility” settings
  3. Find “3D Touch” and tap it
  4. Set the switch for “3D Touch” to OFF to turn the pressure sensitivity off feature of the iPhone display
  5. Disable 3D Touch on iPhone

  6. Exit Settings

That’s it, 3D Touch is disabled so you can save an image using the plain old tap and hold button trick.

Now go ahead and try to save an image from Safari to iPhone again:

  1. Open Safari and go to a webpage with an image you want to keep (like the one you are reading now, use the Shrugging Guy Emoji as the test image)
  2. Get emoji

  3. Tap the image and hold your tap for a few seconds
  4. Tap “Save Image” when the menu options appear

The image is saved in your Photos app Camera Roll as usual.

If 3D Touch is off, you can open up Safari, scroll to a webpage and try the traditional tap and hold trick to save an image from the web to the iOS device, you will always see the familiar “Save” and “Copy” menu, instead of the 3D Touch preview.

If you don’t want to turn off 3D Touch, all you have to do is tweak how you use your iPhone a little so that instead of pressing, you just tap the screen and rest without any pressure on the screen. It sounds a bit confusing, but practice makes perfect.

How can I save a web photo on an iPhone with 3D Touch?

The familiar tap and hold trick to save photo from Safari to iPhone still works, but the most important thing to remember is that now iPhone screen is pressure sensitive due to 3D Touch. So you want to tap and hold as usual, but not press on the screen itself with any pressure, so it’s more like a touch and hold …

  1. Navigate to a web photo as usual (to try this now, we’ve embedded a picture of an Emoji below for you to try)
  2. Get emoji

  3. Touch and hold the iPhone screen with your finger for a few seconds – don’t press down with physical pressure, just tap and rest your finger against the screen on the photo to save
  4. Choose “Save Image” from the popupup menu
  5. How to save an image from the web to Safari on new iPhones

When you see the picture appear,up in a new screen, you applied pressure and 3D Touch was activated instead. You have to touch the screen without any pressure. The screenshot below shows this is happening with a 3D Touch preview, this is not what you want to see if you want to save an image from the web to iPhone:

3D Touch activated on a photo

A helpful trick this involves adjusting the 3D Touch pressure sensitivity on the iPhone to require a firmer pressure, which can help prevent 3D Touch from accidentally triggering instead of the action you might have intended. Or you can rotate the 3D Touch feature completely disabled on iPhone as described above. Her up to you.

Many users disable 3D Touch, among other reasons, whether it is because you cannot easily save images from the web as we describe here, or you may not be able to delete apps from iPhone due to 3D Touch, or because you do other tasks as a result of 3D Touch triggering instead of the expected behavior, by simply disabling 3D Touch, the iPhone can behave as it did before 3D Touch existed. 3D Touch is cool feature, but it can be confusing to use, so often simply turning it off makes for an easier user experience. You are missing some 3D Touch specific features, but if you weren’t using them anyway, you shouldn’t miss it much.
