So after a lot of requests from our users here is a guide about Change the Green Button Maximize Behavior in OS X Yosemite with BetterTouchTool.

The green Button in OS X window bars were used to maximize windows to fit the Mac screen, but since OS X Yosemite the Green Button now defaults windows or apps to full screen mode. This can be changed once by Option + clicking maximize button, but a better solution for some users is to permanently change the green maximization behavior button to work instead as before.

To change the green button maximize behavior you need to use BetterTouchTool, a free application for OS X that performs many other functions and tidily tricks using the Mac trackpad and mouse, but for the purposes here, we’ll only use it to universally adjust window maximization in OS X Yosemite.

Here is how to get the old green button action back by default, this means you just have to click on the green button in a window to maximize it instead of having to choose + click or double-click the title bars:

  1. Download BetterTouchTool for free here
  2. Open BetterTouchTool and grant access to “Accessibility” when prompted (this will open System Preferences)
  3. Allow BetterTouchTool access in OS X preferences

  4. Back in BetterTouchTool, click on the “Other” tab at the top right of the app
  5. Select “Global” from the options on the left
  6. Click on ‘Configure new trigger’ at the bottom
  7. From the ‘Trigger’ drop-down menu, choose the option ‘Left click on green window Button”
  8. In the menu ‘Predefined action’ choose the option ‘Zoom window under cursor’
  9. Go back to the OS X Finder (or any other open app) and click the green button, it should now just maximize the window instead of sending it to full screen mode
  10. Close BetterTouchTool, the changes will remain in effect as long as BetterTouchTool is configured this way and as long as BetterTouchTool has access to control the computer via Security> Privacy> Accessibility
